Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Corporate Empire

The sun rose over downtown Chicago, casting long, sharp shadows across the monolithic glass towers of Miller & Vance Financial. Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, panic was already boiling over into open warfare.

Richard Vance paced back and forth across the imported Turkish rug, his tailored Italian suit jacket unbuttoned as he ran a hand through his thinning hair. His face was slick with nervous sweat. “Are you out of your absolute mind, Margaret? How did Clara get her hands on the Cayman ledger? That file was encrypted with military-grade keys!”

Margaret sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, gripping a porcelain teacup so tightly her knuckles looked translucent. “She must have copied it months ago when Daniel was careless with his laptop. She plays the meek, helpless housewife, Richard, but she’s a viper in silk clothing.”

“If federal investigators open that ledger,” Richard shouted, slamming his fist onto the table, “they won’t just look at Daniel’s tax evasion—they’ll trace the laundering straight back to my accounts! We’ve embezzled over twelve million dollars from the pension funds over the last four years! We’ll all be sharing a federal penitentiary cell by winter!”

“Then fix it,” Margaret snapped coldly, regaining her composure with chilling speed. “Daniel is being held without bail until the arraignment tomorrow morning. We need to discredit Clara before she testifies before the grand jury. Destroy her credibility. Dig up everything from her past, her mental health history, her family—anything that makes her look unstable.”

“The prosecutors already have the medical records, Margaret. Bones don't lie,” Richard muttered, sinking into a leather chair. “Unless…”

“Unless what?”

Richard looked up slowly, a dark, calculating glint in his eyes. “Unless Clara suffers an unfortunate accident before she takes the stand.”

Margaret didn’t flinch. In fact, a thin, approving smile touched the corners of her lips. “Do whatever it takes, Richard. Protect our interests.”

Miles away, sitting safely in a secure safehouse provided by the domestic violence advocacy center, I watched the live security feed of the boardroom on my laptop. Thanks to the micro-bugs I had planted inside Daniel’s favorite fountain pen months ago, every word of their conspiracy echoed clearly through my headphones.

I closed the laptop lid with a soft click and picked up my phone to dial a direct number. “Detective Vance? This is Clara Miller. I have reason to believe my life is in immediate danger. My husband’s associate just put out a hit on me.”
