Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The abandoned shipyard warehouse at Pier 44 was cold, cavernous, and smelled heavily of rusted iron and stagnant ocean water. Shadows stretched long and menacing across the concrete floor as I stepped through the rusted side door, my footsteps echoing sharply in the hollow space.

“I know you’re here, Richard,” I called out, my voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against my ribs.

A slow, mocking laugh echoed from the upper catwalks. Heavy footsteps descended the metal staircase, and out stepped Richard Vance, holding a sleek black revolver in his right hand. His expensive suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, and his eyes wild with desperate fury.

“Clara,” Richard sneered, stepping closer as the dim harbor light caught the barrel of his gun. “I always knew you were smarter than Daniel gave you credit for. The quiet ones are always the most dangerous.”

“You shouldn’t have embezzled from the pension funds, Richard,” I said, keeping my distance while angling my coat pocket directly toward him to ensure the hidden recorder captured every decibel. “And you definitely shouldn’t have tried to put a hit on me.”

Richard’s face contorted into a vicious snarl. “Daniel was a greedy idiot who thought he could control everything, and Margaret is a delusional narcissist. But you? You ruined everything in twenty-four hours because your husband broke your precious wrist? People like you are insects! You don’t destroy dynasties over a bruised bone!”

“A broken wrist? Is that all you think it was?” I whispered, taking a step forward. “It was the final straw in three years of systematic torture, Richard. And now, your empire is burning down right beside his.”

Richard raised the gun, his finger tightening nervously around the trigger. “End of the line, Clara. Say goodbye.”

Before he could pull the trigger, the cavernous warehouse doors burst open with a deafening crash. Floodlights blinded the interior in a blinding white glare, and a chorus of tactical officers flooded the space with weapons drawn.

“DROP THE WEAPON! FBI! DROP IT NOW!”

Richard spun around in sheer panic, realizing too late that he had walked right into a federal ambush. Sirens wailed outside, echoing off the concrete walls as federal agents swarmed him, slamming him violently onto the cold floor and kicking the revolver away.

Detective Vance stepped forward from the tactical unit, looking down at his own panicked, handcuffed brother with profound disgust. “It’s over, Richard. The entire conversation was broadcast live to the federal prosecutor's secure server.”

I stood calmly in the center of the warehouse, watching Richard scream curses as they dragged him away. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Sarah Jenkins: *‘You did it, Clara. They’re both finished.’*

I looked down at my braced wrist, letting out a breath that felt lighter than air. But as I looked toward the harbor entrance, I noticed a sleek black sedan idling silently in the shadows, watching us. Someone else was still out there.
