Chapter 10 - Battle in the Pines

Night had fallen hard over the Smoky Mountains. A thick, icy fog rolled down from the high ridges, blanketing the pine forest in complete darkness. The sound of wind rustling through the high branches drowned out the quiet footfalls of four heavily armed men moving systematically through the trees.
They wore black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and carried suppressed submachine guns. Leading the team was Damon Vance—a tall, scarred man with cold, dead eyes and a wicked scar running down his left cheek.
"Spread out," Damon whispered into his tactical headset. "Julian's life sentence gets erased the moment Captain Miller and his brat disappear out here in the woods. Make it look like a mountain robbery gone wrong. Burn the cabin when you're done."
"Roger that, boss," his lead operative replied, stepping carefully over a fallen pine log. "Moving toward the perimeter—"
Suddenly, a shadow dropped silently from the high branch of an oak tree directly behind the lead operative.
Before the man could react or utter a sound, Andrew Miller’s arm wrapped around his throat in a lethal sleeper hold while his right hand drove a tactical combat disarming maneuver, stripping the operative's weapon. Andrew dragged the man into the dark brush, neutralizing him in less than three seconds without making a single sound.
"Team lead, report," Damon’s voice crackled through the operative's radio. "Status?"
Silence.
"Bravo team, check lead’s position," Damon commanded, panic beginning to creep into his voice.
Fifty yards to the left, two operatives advanced cautiously through the heavy fog, their weapon lights cutting thin beams through the mist.
"I don't see him, boss," one operative whispered, his hands trembling slightly as he aimed his rifle into the dark tree line. "The fog is too thick out here—"
A thermal smoke canister slammed onto the ground right between their feet, instantly detonating in a thick cloud of obscuring gray smoke!
"CONTACT!" the operative screamed, firing blindly into the fog.
Andrew moved like a ghost through his childhood woods. Utilizing his intimate knowledge of the terrain, he flanked the two operatives from behind. He struck the first man across the back of the helmet with the butt of his rifle, dropping him instantly, then tackled the second operative into the mud, disarming him and securing his hands with heavy zip-ties.
In less than two minutes, three of Damon Vance's elite mercenary crew had been completely eliminated from the board without a single shot fired by Andrew.
Damon Vance stood alone in a small clearing fifty yards from the cabin, his heart pounding violently against his ribs. He tore off his night-vision goggles, realizing they were completely useless in the dense smoke and fog. He drew his custom silver handgun, his eyes darting frantically around the silent trees.
"SHOW YOURSELF, MILLER!" Damon screamed into the darkness, his composure completely shattered. "You think you're a big man out here in the dirt? Your wife is going to prison for life! Your daughter is a traumatized orphan! You lost!"
A slow, terrifying voice echoed from the shadows behind him. "I didn't lose anything, Damon."
Damon spun around, raising his handgun—
Andrew stepped out of the fog, executed a swift side-kick directly to Damon's wrist, sending the silver gun flying into the darkness, and followed up with a crushing right hook directly to Damon's jaw.
Damon hit the muddy ground hard, coughing blood, staring up in utter horror at the standing military officer above him.
Andrew stepped forward, placing his heavy boot firmly on Damon's chest, pressing down just enough to pin him to the earth.
"You came into my forest to hurt my child," Andrew said, his voice terrifyingly calm, dark, and absolute. "Your brother tried to steal her future. You tried to take her life."
"Kill me then..." Damon spat, blood dripping from his lip. "Do it! You're a soldier, aren't you?"
Andrew pulled out his tactical radio and keyed the microphone. "Detective Vance, this is Captain Miller. I have Damon Vance and three armed mercenaries secured at my location. Send the State Police tactical unit to collect them."
Andrew looked down at Damon, his eyes filled with cold disdain. "I’m not a killer, Damon. I’m a father. And unlike you and your brother, I play by the law when it serves justice... and I use force when it protects my family."
Five minutes later, the flashing red and blue lights of state police cruisers illuminated the mountain road, their sirens echoing through the peaceful valleys.
Andrew walked back up the wooden steps of the cabin porch. Bear opened the heavy timber door, stepping out with a massive grin on his face.
"All clear, Cap?" Bear asked, throwing a thumb over his shoulder.
"All clear, Bear," Andrew smiled, wiping mud from his hands. "The forest is quiet again."
Andrew walked upstairs to the bedroom. Emma was sitting up in bed, rubbing her eyes sleepily, holding her teddy bear tightly.
"Daddy?" she asked softly. "Is the storm over?"
May you like
Andrew walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and pulled her into a warm, gentle embrace.
"The storm is completely over, baby," Andrew whispered into her hair. "The sun is coming up.
