Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The high-profile arrests of real estate mogul Julian Vance, Lauren Miller, and Victoria Hayes sent shockwaves through the state of Tennessee. News outlets splashed their faces across front pages and television screens, detailing the terrifying conspiracy of land fraud, child abuse, and the reopened murder investigation into Sarah Miller's death.
Three days had passed since the raid at the Riverfront Tower.
The morning light streamed softly through the window of Room 412 at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. The room smelled of warm apple juice and clean linens. Emma sat propped up against fluffy pillows, wearing bright yellow pajamas. Her color had returned, her skin glowing with healthy warmth, though small faint bruises were still visible on her wrists.
Andrew sat beside her bed, peeling an apple with a butter knife, cutting it into neat slices just the way she liked.
"Daddy?" Emma asked softly, her small voice interrupting the quiet hum of the heart monitor.
"Yeah, baby?" Andrew looked up, offering her a slice of apple.
Emma took the apple slice with both hands but didn't eat it right away. Her dark blue eyes, so much like her mother’s, looked at him with a mixture of relief and lingering hesitation. "Is... is Lauren really gone?"
Andrew set the knife down and took her small hand into his own, squeezing it gently. "She is gone, Emma. She is in jail, and she is never, ever coming near you again. Neither is Julian Vance. The judge signed the final protective orders yesterday. Nobody can ever hurt you again."
Emma let out a long, quiet breath, her small shoulders visibly relaxing for the first time in months. She took a bite of the apple, chewing slowly. "She told me... she told me you were dead in the desert, Daddy. She said the bad men took you away and that I had to obey her or she’d throw me away."
Andrew felt a sharp, painful tightness in his throat. He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her fragile frame, burying his face in her soft hair. "I’m so sorry, Emma. I’m so sorry I wasn't here to protect you sooner. But I promise you, on my life, I will never leave your side again."
"I missed you so much," Emma whispered, burying her face into his military shirt, her small arms wrapping tightly around his neck. "I kept Mommy's fairy rock under my pillow in the straw... I prayed to the stars every night that you'd come home."
As Andrew held his crying daughter, a soft knock sounded at the open hospital door.
Detective Marcus Vance stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, but his expression was triumphant.
"Captain," Vance said quietly, gesturing toward the hallway. "Got a minute?"
Andrew gave Emma a gentle kiss on her forehead. "I'll be right outside the door, sweetie. Keep eating your apples."
Andrew stepped into the quiet hallway, pulling the door partially shut behind him. Bear Kowalski stood nearby, leaning against the wall, keeping his watchful eyes on the corridor.
"What's the status, Marcus?" Andrew asked.
Detective Vance opened the file folder. "The grand jury convened this morning. Based on the wiretap recording from the penthouse, Sarah's medical lab reports, and Victoria’s full confession—she broke and spilled everything to save herself from the death penalty—the DA has officially charged Julian Vance and Lauren Miller with First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Homicide, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Federal Wire Fraud."
Andrew let out a slow, steady breath. "Is there any chance of bail?"
"Zero," Vance replied firmly. "The judge ruled them both high-flight risks and dangerous to society. They’re being held in maximum security at the Davidson County Detention Center until trial."
Andrew looked through the small glass window of Room 412, watching Emma happily watching cartoons on the wall-mounted television. "What about the land trust?"
"Your attorney, Evelyn Reed, filed the probate papers this morning," Vance said with a rare smile. "The court has formally recognized Emma as the sole, undisputed owner of the 320-acre estate. The state highway department has already reached out—they want to lease a small edge of the property for environmental research at a massive premium, but the main forest land remains entirely untouched. Exactly as Sarah wanted."
"Good," Andrew said quietly. "Sarah can finally rest in peace."
"There's just one more thing, Cap," Bear interjected, stepping forward with a serious expression. "While Vance's main empire is crumbling, my security team caught wind of something concerning this morning. Julian Vance’s younger brother, Damon Vance, just landed at Nashville International Airport on a private jet from Miami."
Andrew’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Damon Vance?"
"Damon is the black sheep of the Vance family," Vance explained, his voice growing dark. "He runs high-end security and enforcement operations out of South Florida. Off the record? He’s a ruthless fixer who handles the dirty work Julian couldn't touch legally. If Damon is in town, he isn't here to file legal appeals. He's here for revenge."
Andrew's hand instinctively rested on his waist, his military instincts kicking into high alert once again. "He thinks taking me out will stop the prosecution?"
"Or he thinks taking Emma out will break you," Bear warned grimly. "We need to move you and Emma to a secure safehouse immediately."
May you like
Andrew looked through the window at his laughing daughter. The battle against corporate greed was won, but a far more dangerous predator had just entered the territory.
"No safehouse," Andrew said, his voice dropping into an icy, combat-ready tone. "A safehouse makes us targets hiding in a box. We go to my old family cabin in the Smoky Mountains. It's fortified, off-grid, and I know every inch of those woods. If Damon Vance wants a war... I’ll give him one on my terms.
