Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The sun rose the following morning behind a heavy canopy of slate-gray clouds. Inside a private conference room at the Metropolitan Nashville Police Headquarters, the mood was tense.

Detective Marcus Vance sat at the head of a long table, surrounded by two senior prosecutors from the District Attorney's office. Across from them sat Captain Andrew Miller, his jaw tight, accompanied by his newly appointed high-powered attorney, Evelyn Reed—a sharp, uncompromising woman known throughout Tennessee as one of the fiercest child advocacy and criminal defense attorneys in the state.

On the table between them lay Sarah's black metal box, the toxicological reports from the Atlanta laboratory, the land trust documents, and high-definition photographs of Emma’s injuries.

"This changes everything," Senior Prosecutor Thomas Blake said, rubbing his tired eyes as he finished reading Sarah’s handwritten letter. "If these lab reports hold up in court, we aren't just looking at child abuse and forgery charges against Lauren Miller and Victoria Hayes. We're looking at a multi-state conspiracy involving attempted murder, land fraud, and the homicide of Sarah Miller."

"Then arrest them immediately," Andrew said, his voice low and commanding.

Evelyn Reed held up a finger, intervening smoothly. "Not yet, Andrew. If we rush to arrest Victoria and Lauren right now, Julian Vance will use his immense wealth to cut ties with them. He’ll claim he was an innocent third-party investor deceived by two greedy sisters. He'll throw Lauren and Victoria to the wolves and walk away completely untouched."

"She’s right, Captain," Detective Vance agreed. "Julian Vance controls half the real estate board and has judges on his payroll. To take down the head of the snake, we need to catch Julian Vance actively participating in the cover-up."

Andrew leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the wooden table. "How do we do that?"

Evelyn smiled coldly, pulling a small audio recording device from her briefcase. "Julian Vance thinks he holds all the cards because he believes he owns your home and that Emma is too young to speak. He doesn't know we have Sarah’s box, and he doesn't know Victoria was arrested last night after your... little encounter."

"Victoria is currently being held without bail in Franklin on aggravated burglary and assault charges," Detective Vance added with a smirk. "She hasn't been allowed to make a phone call to Julian yet. He thinks she still has the box in her safe."

"So we play on his arrogance," Andrew realized, his tactical mind immediately grasping the play.

"Precisely," Evelyn said. "We set up a meeting between you and Julian Vance under the guise of negotiating a settlement for the house and custody of Emma. You offer to drop all child abuse charges against Lauren and hand over the land rights in exchange for ten million dollars cash and full sole custody of Emma."

Andrew frowned, his stomach turning at the thought. "He’ll think I’m selling out my own daughter."

"And that is exactly why he will believe it," Evelyn replied sharply. "Men like Julian Vance believe every person has a price. He views veterans as broken, desperate, and easily bought. When you offer him the land trust on a silver platter, he will jump at the chance to close the forty-million-dollar highway deal before the state auditing board reviews the titles."

"And during the meeting, we wire you up," Detective Vance said. "The moment Julian admits to conspiring with Lauren to steal the land or hide Sarah’s murder, we move in with federal agents and shut his whole operation down."

Andrew sat in silence for a long moment, processing the risk. If Julian Vance suspected a setup for a single second, he had the resources to order a hit on Andrew, Evelyn, or even Emma inside the hospital.

"What about Emma’s safety?" Andrew asked, his tone leaving no room for error.

"Bear Kowalski and three of his top armed officers are stationed inside her hospital room twenty-four seven," Detective Vance assured him. "No one gets on that floor without federal clearance."

Andrew looked down at Sarah’s diary sitting on the table. He could almost hear her voice whispering in his head, telling him to be strong, to protect their little girl no matter the cost.

"Where do we meet him?" Andrew asked, looking directly into Detective Vance's eyes.

"Julian’s private penthouse at the Riverfront Tower," Vance replied. "Tomorrow night at eight o'clock. It’s a secure, high-rise building with private security. You’ll be entering the lion’s den completely alone."

Andrew stood up, buttoning his military jacket, his stance rock-solid. "He isn't a lion," Andrew said coldly. "He's just a rat in an expensive suit. Let's set the trap.
