Chapter 16 - Echoes of the Past

The success of the Sarah Miller Memorial Children's Trust moved at an incredible speed. Within eight months of its founding, the trust had successfully opened its first state-of-the-art emergency youth shelter in downtown Nashville—a safe, highly secure haven equipped with medical staff, child psychologists, and legal advocates.

It was a bright spring afternoon. Andrew stood in the courtyard of the newly built facility, watching workers install a beautiful bronze plaque at the entrance bearing Sarah's name and portrait.

"It looks incredible, Cap," a familiar booming voice called out.

Andrew turned to see Bear Kowalski walking across the courtyard, wearing a crisp formal suit instead of his usual tactical gear. Bear was now serving as the Chief of Security for the Trust’s facilities nationwide.

"Thanks, Bear," Andrew smiled, shaking his friend's heavy hand. "How are the security systems holding up?"

"Top of the line," Bear reported proudly. "Encrypted biometric access, twenty-four-seven monitoring, and six former military veterans staffing the perimeter. No corrupt politician or corporate thug is getting within a mile of these kids."

Before Andrew could reply, his phone rang. The caller ID displayed Detective Marcus Vance. Andrew answered immediately.

"Marcus, what's up?" Andrew asked.

"Andrew, I need you to come down to the federal courthouse downtown right now," Vance’s voice sounded unusually tense. "We have a situation regarding Julian Vance's asset seizure."

Andrew's brow furrowed. "What kind of situation? Julian is serving life without parole in federal prison."

"Julian is locked up, yes," Vance said quietly. "But the federal marshals just opened an off-grid private safety deposit vault in Chicago linked to Vance Development Holdings. Inside, they found a secondary ledger... and your name was on a high-value international hit contract dated three weeks before you returned from deployment."

Andrew felt an instant chill cut through his chest. "A hit contract?"

"Get down here, Andrew," Vance urged. "There's someone you need to see."

Twenty minutes later, Andrew walked into the secure evidence room at the federal courthouse. Detective Vance and two Federal Marshals stood around a heavy metal table covered in black binder ledgers and financial printouts.

Detective Vance pointed to an open ledger. "Look at this entry, Andrew."

Andrew leaned over the table, reading the precise handwriting:

Project Alpha-9: Target Captain Andrew Miller (US Army). Operation: Neutralize during overseas deployment prior to contract completion. Contractor: Apex Global Security. Payment: $2,500,000. Status: Failed due to premature unit extraction.

Andrew stared at the words in absolute shock. Two years ago, while he was serving overseas, his unit had been suddenly ambushed by unidentified mercenary forces in a remote desert valley—an attack that had forced his early military extraction and sent him home ahead of schedule.

For two years, Andrew had believed that desert ambush was a routine enemy engagement.

"It wasn't an insurgent attack," Andrew realized, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Julian Vance hired a private mercenary firm to murder me in the desert so I would never return home to claim the land."

"Exactly," Vance nodded grimly. "When your unit fought through the ambush and survived, Vance panicked. That’s why he forced Lauren to accelerate the land transfer and hide Emma in the pen—he knew you were coming back alive, and he was running out of time."

"Who is Apex Global Security?" Andrew demanded, his eyes burning with tactical focus.

One of the Federal Marshals stepped forward. "Apex is a rogue private military contractor operating out of Eastern Europe and South America. Their CEO is a former mercenary commander named Victor Vance—Julian and Damon Vance's oldest brother."

Andrew closed his eyes for a split second, taking a deep, steadying breath. The Vance family wasn't just a local real estate syndicate; they were an international criminal enterprise with military-grade resources. Julian was in prison, Damon was locked up, but the oldest brother—the military contractor—was still free, operating in the shadows of the global underworld.

"Is Victor Vance in the country?" Andrew asked sharply.

"Interpol issued a Red Notice an hour ago based on these ledgers," the Marshal replied. "We tracked his private aircraft to an airfield in Atlanta two days ago. He’s in Tennessee, Andrew. And now that he knows his brothers are in prison for life and the family assets are seized, he has nothing left to lose."

Andrew straightened his posture, his eyes cold and unyielding. The war he thought was over had one final, lethal shadow remaining.

"He wants the man who destroyed his family's empire," Andrew said flatly.

"We can put you, Emma, and Aris into Federal Witness Protection immediately," the Marshal offered.

Andrew looked the Marshal dead in the eye and shook his head firmly. "No more running. No more hiding. Victor Vance wants a fight? Tell him I'll be waiting at the estate.
