Chapter 3 - The Digital Safehouse

On the evening of the attack, Clara decided to force their hand. She knew that Daniel was planning to file the
incompetency petition the following morning. She had intercepted an email from Evelyn to Dr. Sterling confirming
that "the package is ready for delivery."
Clara had prepared herself. She wore a simple blouse and, using medical-grade adhesive, securely taped the
micro-recorder directly beneath her collarbone. The device was a military-grade spy microphone she had developed
for a government client years ago. It was virtually undetectable by standard bug sweeps and was activated by a
specific sequence of physical pressure.
She confronted Daniel in the library of their secluded estate. Evelyn was sitting in an armchair nearby, sipping
tea with an icy, expectant smile on her face.
"I know about the forged medical records, Daniel," Clara said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging
through her veins. "I know about Dr. Sterling. I’ve copied the files. If you don't pack your things and sign a full
divorce settlement relinquishing all claims to Apex Secure, I will hand everything over to the federal authorities."
Daniel’s face went blank. The charm melted away, revealing a cold, sociopathic rage. He looked at Evelyn, who
slowly set her teacup down.
"You think you’re so clever, Clara," Evelyn sneered. "Who do you think they will believe? A woman with a
documented history of mental instability, or her devoted husband who has spent years trying to save her? Dr.
Sterling is ready to sign the commitment papers tonight. All we need is a catalyst."
"A catalyst?" Clara whispered, taking a step back.
Daniel closed the distance between them. "An episode," he said softly. "An unfortunate, violent episode where
you attacked me, and I had to defend myself. By the time the police arrive, you’ll be so hysterical—or so quiet—
that they’ll have no choice but to cart you away."
Clara reached for her collarbone, pressing hard against the tape, activating the recording device. "You won't get
away with this, Daniel."
"Watch me," he growled.
He lunged at her. Clara fought back, but Daniel was far stronger. He threw her against the heavy mahogany
desk, shattering a glass vase. Shards of glass sliced into Clara’s skin. Daniel’s hands found her throat, squeezing
with brutal, lethal intent. Clara gasped for air, her vision beginning to blur with dark spots.
Through the roaring in her ears, she heard Evelyn’s voice, sharp and clinical. "Not the face this time, Daniel!
We need her to look crazy, not murdered. Put her in the car. We’ll dump her at the ER. It will look like she went
into a manic rage, fled the house, and fell."
Daniel dragged her unconscious body to the car in the pouring rain. They thought they had covered every base.
They had wiped the library clean of Daniel's fingerprints on the broken glass, torn Daniel's shirt to simulate her

attacking him, and prepared their story for the police.
But they had completely missed the tiny piece of plastic taped to her chest.
