Chapter 8 - The Traitor Within

The FBI raid sent shockwaves through the tech industry. Apex Secure's stock prices, which had dipped during the
initial media smear campaign, surged as the public realized Clara was the victim of a massive corporate espionage
conspiracy.
But Clara’s investigation wasn't finished. She knew that Marcus and Daniel couldn't have bypassed the
company's multi-factor biometric security protocols alone. They needed an inside asset—someone higher up than a
junior IT manager.
Clara discharge herself from the hospital against Dr. Morris's advice. She wore a simple, elegant dark suit, a silk
scarf carefully wrapped around her neck to hide the fading purple bruises. Walking with a slight limp but carrying
her head high, she entered the Apex Secure headquarters for the first time since the attack.
The employees stood and applauded as she walked through the lobby. She nodded to them, her face warm but
determined. She walked straight into the executive boardroom, where a special meeting of the board of directors
was underway.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, her father's oldest friend and the company's Chief Financial
Officer. He stood up, his face full of concern. "Clara! You shouldn't be out of the hospital. We are so relieved you
are safe."
"Thank you, Arthur," Clara said, taking her seat at the other end of the table. "I'm here because we have a leak.
A very serious one."
"Yes, Marcus Vance," Pendelton said, shaking his head. "To think we had a traitor in our midst. The FBI is
handling him."
"Marcus was just the hands, Arthur," Clara said, opening her laptop and projecting a series of data logs onto the
wall-sized screen. "To bypass the biometric vault, they needed a master override key. A key that only three people
in this company possess: myself, our Chief of Security, and you."
The room went dead silent. Arthur Pendelton's face paled, but he quickly recovered, offering a patronizing
smile. "Clara, surely you aren't suggesting—"
"I don't suggest, Arthur. I prove," Clara interrupted. "This is the digital signature of the override key used by
Marcus. It was accessed from an IP address registered to a luxury penthouse in Miami. A penthouse owned by a
holding company under your wife's maiden name."
She clicked a button, displaying a series of financial transfers. "Over the last six months, five million dollars
was transferred from Vanguard Tech's offshore accounts into that same holding company. You sold my father out,
Arthur. You helped Daniel and Evelyn plan my 'mental breakdown' so you could secure a massive payout from
Vanguard."
Pendelton stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "This is outrageous! You're unstable, Clara! Just
look at you, accusing your father’s oldest friend!"
Two FBI agents, who had been waiting outside the door, entered the boardroom. "Arthur Pendelton, you are
under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy."
As they led a shouting, desperate Pendelton out in handcuffs, Clara looked around the table at the remaining

board members. "Apex Secure was built on trust, integrity, and absolute security," she said, her voice now strong
and resonant. "We will rebuild. And we will never be compromised again."
