Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Inside the St. Matthew’s trauma bay, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Officer Reyes stood guard at
the door, his eyes locked onto Daniel and Evelyn.
"Officer, this is a complete violation of our rights!" Evelyn demanded, her voice rising in pitch. "My son is a
prominent businessman. This... this doctor is colluding with an unstable woman! We demand to speak to your
captain!"
"Ma'am, sit down and shut up," Officer Reyes said, his voice flat and unyielding.
Dr. Lena Morris carefully handed the sealed specimen bag containing the micro-recorder to a forensics officer
who had just arrived. "This was taped to the patient's chest. Given the nature of her injuries, which are highly
inconsistent with self-harm and consistent with strangulation and blunt force trauma, this device must be treated as
critical evidence."
"Strangulation?" Daniel stammered, his sweat-slicked hair clinging to his forehead. "She... she choked herself! I
told you, she’s crazy!"
"Mr. Vance—or rather, Mr. Sterling—whoever you are," Dr. Morris said, glare piercing through him. "I have
been a trauma surgeon for fifteen years. I know what self-inflicted wounds look like. These bruises are deep,
bilateral, and shaped by a large set of hands. Unless your wife has hands twice the size of her own and can exert
hundreds of pounds of pressure on her own trachea while unconscious, you are lying."
Just then, the double doors burst open. Maya, Clara's attorney, rushed into the room, flanked by two private
security guards. She looked at Clara's bruised and battered form on the bed, her face hardening into an expression
of pure fury.
"I am Maya Lin, legal counsel for Clara Vance," she announced, flashing her credentials. "And I have already
contacted the District Attorney's office. Officer Reyes, I am handing over a digital dossier containing encrypted
emails, forged medical documents, and banking transactions linking Daniel Vance and Evelyn Vance to a corrupt
psychiatrist named Dr. Sterling."
Daniel took a step back, his eyes darting toward the window. "This is a setup. Clara is trying to ruin me!"
"We also have a live feed," Maya added, holding up her tablet. "The moment Clara's heart rate spiked to a
critical level, her smart-home backup system uploaded the last forty-eight hours of local network traffic to our
secure server. We have the IP addresses. We have the logins. And we have the audio."
Officer Reyes looked at the tablet, then at Daniel. He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Daniel Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, domestic violence, and conspiracy to commit fraud."
"No!" Evelyn shrieked, grabbing Reyes's arm. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are?"
"And you, ma'am," Reyes said, pushing her back and pulling out a second pair of cuffs, "are under arrest as an
accessory to attempted murder and conspiracy."
As the metal cuffs clicked shut around Daniel’s wrists, he looked back at Clara. Her good eye was open, staring
at him with a cold, triumphant clarity. She couldn't speak yet, but her silence was the loudest sound in the room.

The empire of lies they had built so carefully had crumbled in a matter of minutes, all because they had
underestimated the brilliant mind of the woman they tried to destroy.
