Chapter 6 - Maya's Move

The legal battleground was set at the county courthouse. Daniel and Evelyn's lawyers, a team of high-priced
corporate defense attorneys led by a ruthless man named Richard Sterling (no relation to the corrupt doctor), filed a
motion for immediate bail and a dismissal of all charges, citing "tainted and manufactured evidence."
At the preliminary hearing, the courtroom was packed with reporters, bloggers, and curious onlookers. Daniel
stood in his orange jumpsuit, looking tired but confident, while Evelyn sat beside her lawyers, her head held high as
if she were attending a high-society gala.
Richard Sterling stood before the judge, a smug smile on his face. "Your Honor, the prosecution's entire case
rests on a highly suspicious, unverified audio recording found on a device supposedly taped to the alleged victim's
body. Clara Vance is a known cybersecurity expert, a woman who specializes in digital manipulation, voice
synthesis, and deepfakes. We have medical reports from a licensed psychiatrist, Dr. Julian Sterling, proving that
Mrs. Vance suffers from severe delusional paranoia. We submit that this recording is a sophisticated fabrication
designed to destroy my client's reputation and secure sole control of Apex Secure."
The prosecutor, a young and determined woman named Assistant DA Sarah Jenkins, stood up. "Your Honor, the
medical forensic report from St. Matthew’s Hospital clearly states—"
"A hospital doctor is not a psychiatric expert," Richard Sterling interrupted smoothly. "We demand that the
charges be dismissed, and that Mrs. Vance be ordered to undergo a court-mandated psychiatric evaluation."
Maya, sitting in the public gallery, caught Clara's eye. Clara nodded slowly.
Maya stood up, stepping forward to the bar. "Your Honor, as legal counsel for Clara Vance, and with the
permission of the prosecution, we would like to present a supplemental piece of evidence that has just been verified
by an independent federal forensic team."
Richard Sterling laughed. "More fabricated files from Mrs. Vance’s digital playground?"
"Not quite, Mr. Sterling," Maya said, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. She handed a flash drive to the
bailiff. "This is the complete, unedited server logs from Apex Secure’s core database, timestamped at the exact
moment of the attack. It contains the raw, uncompressed metadata of the audio recording, which was
simultaneously streamed to an off-site, immutable blockchain ledger. In simpler terms: it is physically and
mathematically impossible to alter, edit, or deepfake this file. It was recorded in real-time, verified by automated
security nodes worldwide."
The judge frowned, looking at the technical documents. "A blockchain-verified recording?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Maya said, turning to glare at Daniel. "And we also have the automated security footage
from the public library street-camera, which captured Daniel Vance carrying Clara’s limp, unconscious body out of
their house in the rain, while Evelyn Vance held an umbrella over him. It seems they forgot that the town’s public
infrastructure was upgraded to our company's high-definition security systems last year."

Daniel’s lawyer quickly leaned over, whispering frantically to his client. Daniel's confident posture vanished.
He began to sweat, his eyes darting toward his mother, whose aristocratic composure was rapidly slipping.
