Chapter 4 - THE GOLDEN TRAP

Twenty-four hours after his arrest, Daniel was released on a staggering five-hundred-thousand-dollar bail,
funded by a shady high-interest loan shark he had been forced to contact in desperation. He stepped out of the
courthouse into the bright afternoon sun, his head pounding, his clothes smelling of sweat and ruin.
Vanessa was waiting for him in her sleek red sports car, her face pale behind her designer sunglasses.
"Daniel! Oh my God," she cried as he slid into the passenger seat. "This is a nightmare! The press is
everywhere. There are photographers outside the house!"
"Drive," Daniel growled, slamming the door. "Just drive us back to the house. We need to gather our things,
access my personal safe, and get out of the state until Victor can sort this legal mess out."
Vanessa stepped on the gas, the tires screeching. "The banks, Daniel... I tried to use my credit card this morning
at the salon. It was declined. I tried to log into our joint account, and it said 'Account Suspended.' What is
happening?"
"It's a temporary freeze," Daniel lied, though a cold dread was clawing at his chest. "Once my lawyers present
our case, they'll have to lift it. Evelyn is a weak girl. She’ll back down once she realizes a trial will drag her family
name through the mud."
But when they turned down the quiet, leafy street of their upscale neighborhood, Daniel’s heart dropped.
A massive yellow moving truck was parked directly in his driveway. Three muscular movers were carrying his
expensive leather sofa, his high-end stereo equipment, and his designer wardrobe out of the front door.
Standing on the manicured lawn, looking radiant in a tailored emerald green coat and holding a sleeping baby in
a plush carrier, was Evelyn. Beside her stood her father, Charles, and a man in a sharp grey suit holding a clipboard.
Daniel flung the car door open before Vanessa had even fully stopped. "What the hell do you think you’re
doing?!" he screamed, storming onto the lawn. "This is my house! Get these thieves out of here!"
Evelyn didn't flinch. She looked at him with cool, distant eyes, her hand gently patting the sleeping baby on her
chest.
"Actually, Daniel, it’s my house," Evelyn said calmly. "The title was held by a holding company called 'Aurora
Holdings.' I am the sole trustee of Aurora. Your lease has been terminated due to non-payment and breach of
conduct. You have thirty minutes to collect whatever clothes my movers have placed in those cardboard boxes on
the curb."
"You b*tch!" Daniel roared, lunging toward her.
Before he could take two steps, two massive security guards stepped in front of him, their hands resting
ominously on their holstered Tasers.

Charles Sterling stepped forward, his eyes burning with a quiet, lethal intensity. "I suggest you watch your
language around my daughter and my granddaughter, Mr. Vance. One more threatening gesture, and I will
personally ensure your bail is revoked before sunset."
Daniel looked at the cardboard boxes on the wet curb. His designer suits were piled haphazardly inside them.
His life, stripped down to garbage.
"You think you’ve won, Evelyn?" Daniel sneered, shaking with rage. "You’re a single mother now. A damaged,
pathetic divorcée. I’ll make sure the world knows what a manipulative snake you are!"

"I am a Sterling, Daniel," Evelyn replied, her voice ringing with absolute confidence. "And you are nothing."
