Chapter 5 - THE SNAKE'S VENOM

Three weeks had passed since the night of the storm. The story of Daniel Vance’s dramatic arrest and the fall of
Vance Logistics had become a sensation in high-society circles, but Vanessa was determined not to go down
without a fight. She had a plan to salvage their reputation and ruin Evelyn's standing once and for all.
Vanessa booked a live interview with a popular local lifestyle and gossip broadcast, framing herself and Daniel
as the true victims of the "corrupt, billionaire Sterling empire."
Inside the television studio, Vanessa sat under the warm studio lights, wearing a modest, tear-stained expression
and a simple black dress designed to make her look like a grieving victim.
"We were just two young entrepreneurs trying to build a life," Vanessa sobbed into a delicate silk handkerchief
as the cameras rolled. "Evelyn Sterling used her family's massive wealth to control Daniel. She was unstable,
abusive, and when Daniel tried to leave her because he fell in love with me, she used her father's political
connections to frame him. They threw him in jail and kicked us out onto the street. They even took my personal
belongings!"
The interviewer, a sharp-nosed woman named Clara, nodded with practiced sympathy. "It sounds like a classic
abuse of power, Vanessa. Do you have proof of these claims?"
"Of course we do," Vanessa lied smoothly. "We have emails, messages—"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the studio swung open.
The studio crew gasped. The cameraman instinctively panned his lens toward the entrance.
Walking down the aisle was Evelyn.
She was stunning. The post-pregnancy puffiness was gone, replaced by a radiant, powerful glow. She wore a
flawless white Dior pantsuit, her dark hair cascading in elegant waves over her shoulders. Behind her walked two
assistants carrying heavy leather portfolios.
"I apologize for the interruption, Clara," Evelyn said, her voice smooth and commanding as she walked right
onto the set. "But I believe in complete journalistic integrity. And since Vanessa is sharing 'proof,' I thought I would
bring some of my own."
Vanessa’s face drained of color. "What... what are you doing here? You can't be here! This is a private
broadcast!"
"Actually, my father purchased this broadcasting network yesterday afternoon," Evelyn said with a polite,
devastating smile. She sat down in the empty armchair opposite Vanessa, adjusting her jacket. "So technically, I
own the air you are currently breathing in this room."
Clara, sensing the rating goldmine unfolding live on air, leaned forward. "Mrs. Sterling... please, go on."

Evelyn signaled her assistant, who handed her a tablet. "Vanessa claims she was a victim. But here we have the
financial audits of Vance Logistics. Over the last eighteen months, Vanessa, you received over eighty thousand
dollars in 'consulting fees' from Daniel’s company. This money was taken directly from the employee healthcare
fund."
A collective gasp echoed through the studio crew.
"And here," Evelyn continued, swiping the screen to display a series of high-definition photographs, "are the
security feeds from the jewelry store where you used my personal, stolen credit card to purchase that lovely
diamond ring you’re wearing right now. The police have already issued a warrant for grand larceny in your name."
Vanessa stared at the screen, her mouth open in a silent scream of horror.

"You wanted to tell your story, Vanessa," Evelyn whispered, leaning closer. "I suggest you tell it to the judge."
