Chapter 6 - THE PAPER TRAIL

While Vanessa’s public breakdown was airing on live television, Daniel was sitting in a cramped, dimly lit

office in a rundown commercial district, frantically trying to salvage what was left of his company.

Vance Logistics was hemorrhaging clients. The moment the news of his arrest for domestic abuse broke, three

of his largest retail partners pulled their contracts. The bank had frozen his corporate lines of credit pending a

forensic audit.

"There has to be a way out of this, Victor!" Daniel screamed, throwing a stack of folders across the room. "We

have the assets in the Panama account! Transfer those funds to our operating account immediately!"

Victor, who looked like he hadn't slept in a week, stared at his laptop screen. "Daniel... the Panama account is

gone."

Daniel stopped pacing. His heart gave a violent, painful thud. "What do you mean, gone? It's a secure offshore

account!"

"The forensic accountants hired by the Sterling Group didn't just look at our local books," Victor said, his voice

barely a whisper. "They tracked the IP addresses used to access the Panama account. They proved the funds

originated from embezzled Sterling subsidiary contracts. Under federal anti-money laundering laws, the FBI issued

a seizure order. The funds were frozen three hours ago."

Daniel felt a cold sweat break out across his entire body. "The FBI? No... no, this is a civil dispute! It's a

divorce!"

"It was a divorce," a calm, chilling voice spoke from the doorway.

Daniel whipped his head around.

Charles Sterling stood in the doorway, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits. Charles looked around the

dusty, cramped office with an expression of intense amusement.

"You really thought you were a genius, didn't you, Daniel?" Charles said, stepping into the room. "You thought

a boy from the suburbs could outmaneuver a family that has run the shipping corridors of this country for four

generations."

"You set me up," Daniel hissed, his fists clenching. "You let me marry her! You let me take the money!"

"I let you show your true character," Charles corrected him. "My daughter wanted to believe in you. I gave her

the space to realize who you were on her own terms. But the moment you laid a hand on her, the moment you

pushed my pregnant daughter into the mud... you signed your own death warrant."

One of the federal agents stepped forward, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. "Daniel Vance. You are under

arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering. You have the right to remain silent."

As the cold steel clamped around Daniel’s wrists, he looked at Charles with desperate, pleading eyes. "Please...

Charles. We can make a deal. I’ll sign the divorce papers. I’ll give up everything. Just don't ruin me."

May you like

Charles leaned in, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Ruin you? Daniel, we haven't even started yet."
