Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

The federal courtroom was packed to the brim with reporters, socialites, and sketch artists. The trial of Daniel
Vance and Vanessa Thorne had become the most watched judicial drama of the decade.
Daniel sat at the defense table, his hair messy, his cheap suit hanging loosely off his thin frame. Beside him,
Vanessa looked completely defeated, her eyes red-rimmed and staring blankly at the polished mahogany table.
On the other side of the courtroom, Evelyn sat next to her father and her legal team. She was the picture of
grace and resilience, wearing a sharp navy blue tailored suit, her eyes fixed on the judge.
"The defendants, Daniel Vance and Vanessa Thorne, stand accused of multiple federal counts," Judge Evelyn
Hayes announced, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Including wire fraud, embezzlement, grand
larceny, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and reckless endangerment."
The prosecution spent the next three hours presenting an airtight, devastating mountain of evidence. They
played the high-definition security footage of the attempted kidnapping at the pediatric clinic. They presented the
financial audits showing the millions embezzled from Sterling Logistics. They even played a recorded phone
conversation between Daniel and Vanessa, captured via wiretap, planning the extortion of the Sterling family.
When it was Daniel's turn to speak, he tried to plead for mercy.
"I was desperate," Daniel cried, his voice cracking as he looked at the jury. "Evelyn’s father ruined my business!
He cut me off! I only wanted to see my daughter! I am a good father!"
The prosecutor, a formidable woman named ADA Marcus, stepped forward. "A good father, Mr. Vance? Is that
why you pushed your nine-month pregnant wife off a porch into freezing mud, threw her hospital bag into the dirt,
and left her to go into labor alone in a storm while you celebrated with your mistress?"
A low murmur of disgust rippled through the gallery.
The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.
"On all counts, we find the defendants, Daniel Vance and Vanessa Thorne... guilty," the jury foreperson
announced.
The judge looked down at Daniel and Vanessa with absolute severity. "Your actions, driven by pure greed and
malice, are abhorrent. Daniel Vance, I sentence you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of
parole. Vanessa Thorne, I sentence you to fifteen years."
As the handcuffs clicked into place, Daniel looked back at Evelyn one last time, tears of regret streaming down
his face.
May you like
Evelyn didn't look back. She was already looking at her future.
