Chapter 12 - Camille’s Desperate Alliance

The maximum-security federal holding facility smelled of industrial bleach, cold steel, and palpable despair.
I walked down the gleaming white-tiled corridor, escorted by a heavily armored corrections officer whose heavy boots echoed sharply against the floor with every step. The bright fluorescent overhead lights cast harsh, unforgiving shadows across the concrete walls.
I hadn’t come to gloat. I had come for answers.
When federal investigators decrypted Jonathan Vance’s personal communication logs following his expulsion from Vance Tower, they discovered a series of encrypted messages exchanged between Jonathan and a secondary cell phone registered inside the federal women’s correctional annex—a phone smuggled past security by a corrupt prison guard.
The recipient of those messages was Camille Vance.
The corrections officer stopped in front of Cell block 4-B, a heavy steel door fitted with a reinforced polycarbonate viewing window. He unlocked the electronic deadbolt with a loud, mechanical *clack* and swung the door open.
Camille sat on the edge of a bolted-down steel cot, wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit that swallowed her frame. Her blonde hair, usually meticulously styled and highlighted, was dull and unwashed, tied back in a messy knot. Her face was devoid of makeup, revealing dark, bruised circles of absolute exhaustion beneath her bloodshot eyes.
When she saw me standing in the doorway, she didn’t scream. She didn’t lunge forward with manic rage. She simply stared up at me with a hollow, dead expression that sent a faint chill down my spine.
“You look terrible, Camille,” I said quietly, stepping across the threshold and standing a few feet from her cot.
Camille let out a dry, rattling laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. “And you look entirely too smug, Ellie. Enjoy it while it lasts. Kings and queens always fall from their thrones eventually.”
“Uncle Jonathan is in federal custody, Camille,” I stated, watching her reaction closely. “Your grand alliance with our long-lost relative didn't quite work out the way you planned, did it?”
A flicker of genuine panic crossed Camille’s hollow eyes before she quickly masked it behind a cold, defensive sneer. “Jonathan was just a stepping stone. He promised me that once he took over Vance Enterprises, he would buy out my bail, drop my federal indictments, and fly me to a private island where your little corporate audits couldn’t touch me.”
“He was using you, just like you used everyone else,” I said, shaking my head slowly. “He never intended to help you escape. He just wanted your proxy signature on his corporate raid documents so he could consolidate his own power.”
Camille stood up slowly from the cot, walking over until she stood just inches away from the polycarbonate partition separating us—or rather, standing right in front of me with no glass barrier, since this was an open consultation room. Her breath smelled faintly of stale institutional coffee.
“You think you’re so smart, don’t you, Ellie?” Camille whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. “You think because you saved the company, because you outsmarted Jonathan, because you have Daniel standing by your side like some obedient puppy, that you’ve finally won.”
“I didn’t win a game, Camille,” I replied steadily. “I just stopped cleaning up your messes.”
Camille’s lips pulled back in a terrifying, manic smile. “It’s not over. You don’t know what Mother and Father are planning behind closed doors. You think cutting off our voting shares and locking me in a federal cell ended the family dynasty? There are trusts, Ellie. Secret trusts established by Grandfather that even Uncle Jonathan couldn’t touch. And the moment those trusts mature next month, the entire board reverts back to parental control.”
I stared at her, my mind racing. Secret trusts? In all my years auditing the company books, I had never encountered any restricted family trusts beyond the primary operational accounts.
“You’re bluffing,” I said, keeping my voice firm.
“Am I?” Camille tilted her head, her eyes gleaming with unhinged triumph. “Ask Father about the codicil he signed the night before my wedding. Not the one for the vault. The one filed in the Cayman Islands under a grandfathered family charter. The moment I’m convicted, my share automatically transfers to Mother and Father—giving them absolute veto power over every single corporate decision you make.”

The cold knot in my stomach returned, twisting tighter than before. Even from inside a maximum-security prison cell, my sister was still weaving a web of toxic legal sabotage designed to drag me down with her.
“Enjoy your little victory in the tower, Ellie,” Camille whispered as the corrections officer stepped forward to grab my arm and escort me out. “Because when the final trust matures, I’ll be walking out of these gates, and you’ll be picking up the pieces of a burned-down empire.”
