Chapter 2 - The Microphone Takes the Fall

The screech of audio feedback pierced the ballroom, temporarily drowning out the frantic gasps of two hundred stunned wedding guests.

Daniel gripped the microphone so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. His eyes swept across the sea of open-mouthed socialites, wealthy investors, and terrified family members before locking onto my father, Richard Vance, who sat frozen at the head table with his fork suspended halfway to his mouth.

“For months, Richard, you believed your eldest daughter Ellie was losing her grip,” Daniel spoke into the mic, his voice steady, carrying an undeniable weight of absolute conviction. “You whispered behind her back that she was unstable, paranoid, and unfit to manage the family empire. But every single accusation was a carefully orchestrated lie designed by your precious youngest daughter.”

Father slowly lowered his fork, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple. He hauled his heavy frame out of his seat, his voice booming with aristocratic fury. “Daniel! You are standing at your own wedding reception making insane, slanderous accusations against my wife and daughter! Cut the microphone right now, or I will ensure you never work another day in financial consulting in this city!”

“Go ahead, Richard,” my attorney stepped forward from the shadows of the doorway, his calm, measured tone cutting through Father’s bluster. He opened a leather folder and slid a certified document onto the nearest guest table. “You might want to review the emergency injunction freezing all corporate accounts belonging to Vance Enterprises, signed by Judge Harrison less than twenty minutes ago.”

Mother let out a sharp, theatrical gasp, clutching pearls that suddenly felt entirely too heavy around her neck. “Freezing our accounts? On what legal grounds? This is an outrage! We are pillars of this community!”

“Pillars built on quicksand, Mrs. Vance,” the forensic accountant interjected, stepping up beside my attorney with a sleek tablet displaying glowing financial graphs. “Between March and May of this year, exactly $286,450 was siphoned from the primary operational reserve of Vance Event Management. The destination account was an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the explicit beneficial ownership of Miss Camille Vance.”

Camille scrambled to her feet from where she had collapsed on the stage, her mascara running in dark, jagged streaks down her pale cheeks. “It’s a lie! Ellie hacked my laptop! She’s always envied me! Daddy, make them stop! Make them arrest her!”

She pointed a manicured, trembling finger straight at me as I slowly picked myself up from the marble floor, brushing the invisible dust from my navy silk dress. My shoulder throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, but my mind had never been sharper. I straightened my posture, lifted my chin, and met Camille’s frantic, panic-stricken eyes across the wide expanse of the dance floor.

“I didn’t hack your laptop, Camille,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the crowd without even needing a microphone. “You were far too arrogant to secure your files. You left your personal cloud storage logged in on the office desktop when you went on your bachelorette trip to Cabo. All I had to do was open the folder titled ‘Project C’ to find the scanned copies of my forged signature, complete with the time stamps matching every single fraudulent wire transfer.”

Silence descended upon the ballroom so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning units sounded like a roaring jet engine.

Daniel looked down at Camille, disgust radiating from every line of his rigid posture. “She didn’t just forge your signature, Richard. She forged mine, too. Two weeks ago, Camille approached me with a prenuptial amendment. She claimed it was just a standard formality protecting her future inheritance. It wasn’t. It was an assignment of liability transferring all corporate debt directly onto my personal holdings, while she transferred her real estate portfolio into a blind trust.”

Father’s head whipped around toward his youngest daughter, his eyes widening in horrified realization. “Camille… is that true? Did you manipulate Daniel as well?”

“Daddy, no! He’s lying because he found out I wanted an annulment!” Camille shrieked, her voice cracking into a hysterical register as she lunged toward her new husband, clawing desperately at his tuxedo jacket. “You loved me! You promised you’d protect me!”

“I loved the woman I thought you were, Camille,” Daniel replied coldly, stepping back out of her reach and letting her stumble forward onto the polished wood of the stage. “Not a parasitic fraudster who uses people like disposable pawns.”

At that moment, the unmistakable wail of approaching sirens echoed from the street outside the hotel. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the towering arched windows, casting eerie, shifting patterns across the terrified faces of the wedding guests.

My attorney nodded toward the main entrance. Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a plainclothes detective from the financial crimes division, pushed open the double doors and strode purposefully into the ballroom.

The fairy-tale wedding had officially reached its final, catastrophic act.
