Chapter 8 - Exile from the Estate

The image glowing on the massive rolling monitor was not a legal injunction. It was a live security camera feed from the master vault of the Vance family estate—a secure underground room that only my father, my mother, and I possessed the biometric passcodes to enter.

And standing right in the center of the vault, casually flipping through stacks of bearer bonds and confidential stock certificates, was Camille Vance.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. People surged forward in their seats, staring in utter disbelief at the screen. How was Camille standing in the family vault when she was supposed to be under house arrest awaiting federal arraignment?

Victor Vance laughed triumphantly, raising his voice so it carried cleanly over the microphone system without even needing an amplifier. “You thought you locked her away, Ellie? You thought a simple bail restriction could hold a woman who owns half the judges in this county? That vault contains the original controlling shares of Vance Enterprises—shares that your father signed over to Camille in a private codicil three months ago before you staged your corporate coup!”

My mind raced at light-speed. A private codicil? Father had never mentioned any codicil. Unless…

“It’s a forgery,” I stated clearly into my microphone, my voice remaining ice-cold despite the chaotic roaring in my ears. “Just like the wire transfer authorizations. Just like the prenuptial debt assignments.”

“Prove it!” Victor shouted, stepping onto the lower step of the stage. “That document was notarized by the senior partner of Vance & Associates, bearing your father’s physical fingerprint and seal! The moment Camille walks out of that estate with those bearer bonds, she legally controls fifty-one percent of the voting stock. Your emergency restructuring is null and void!”

The room erupted into total pandemonium. Reporters shouted overlapping questions, flashbulbs blinded me from every direction, and the mayor stood frozen beside the podium, looking utterly bewildered by the unfolding disaster.

Before Victor could take another step toward the stage, the main doors of the ballroom swung open with a heavy crash.

Daniel strode down the center aisle, flanked not by hotel security, but by four federal marshals in tactical gear, their badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers. Behind them walked Detective Marcus Vance, holding a secondary tablet displaying real-time GPS coordinates.

Victor’s triumphant smirk instantly faltered, turning into a mask of uneasy confusion. “What is the meaning of this? This is a civil property dispute! Federal marshals have no jurisdiction here!”

“They do when the property in that vault consists of federal securities tied to an ongoing interstate money-laundering investigation,” Daniel announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority as he stepped up onto the stage beside me.

Daniel turned his phone around, displaying the live security feed on the massive screen behind Victor. The camera angle shifted, zooming in on Camille as she frantically tried to force open a secondary wall safe with a crowbar.

“Mr. Vance,” Detective Marcus Vance said loudly, stepping up to Victor and resting his hand casually on the holster of his service weapon. “Your client violated her bail conditions approximately forty-five minutes ago by cutting off her ankle monitor and breaking into a federal evidentiary holding site. Right now, she’s committing a felony live on national television.”

Victor turned pale as a sheet, staring at the screen in horrified disbelief. “That’s… that’s impossible. She told me the vault was completely clean…”

“Camille is a pathological liar, Victor,” I said quietly, stepping down to the edge of the stage and looking directly into his terrified eyes. “She lied to her parents, she lied to her husband, she lied to her investors, and she clearly lied to you.”

On the screen, the door of the wall safe finally swung open—not revealing millions in bearer bonds, but instead a blinking red camera and a stack of federal seizure notices stamped with the seal of the Department of Justice.

Camille froze, staring directly into the hidden security lens as the heavy steel doors of the estate vault began to lock automatically from the outside, sealing her inside the very trap she had spent months designing.

The federal marshals deployed outside the estate didn’t even wait for her to turn around. Within seconds, the live feed showed tactical officers swarming the vault room, hands forcing Camille down onto the cold concrete floor as the steel handcuffs snapped shut for the second time in a week.

This time, there would be no bail. There would be no escape. The exile from the estate was absolute.
