Chapter 12 - The Ghost from the Family Tree

Three days after the boardroom briefing, Arthur Vance walked into my private study at the estate carrying a thick, leather-bound dossier stamped with red confidential classification markers.

He didn't look triumphant; instead, his face was pale, and his brow was furrowed with deep, troubled lines as he placed the folder down on my desk.

“Evelyn,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a somber whisper. “You’re not going to like what we found hiding behind Meridian Holdings.”

I calmly folded my reading glasses and set them down on the desk, looking directly into his worried eyes. “Arthur, after surviving my son selling my wheelchair and my brother-in-law trying to steal my empire, I assure you my threshold for shock is exceptionally high. Just tell me the name.”

Arthur took a deep breath, opening the folder to reveal a high-resolution corporate organizational chart and a series of birth and adoption certificates dating back over forty years.

“It’s not Richard. And it’s not anyone from the domestic corporate syndicate,” Arthur said slowly. “The ultimate beneficial owner and sole controlling shareholder of Meridian Holdings is Victor Vance.”

The name hit me like a physical blow to the chest. The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis.

“Victor?” I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. “Victor Vance? Thomas’s estranged older brother? But... but he died in a boating accident off the coast of Maine thirty-five years ago! We attended his memorial service! Thomas mourned him for a decade!”

“That’s what the family was led to believe,” Arthur said grimly, sliding a certified death certificate and a recent passport photograph across the desk. “Our forensic investigators tracked down hospital records, international maritime logs, and facial recognition data from Geneva. Victor didn'g die in that boating accident, Evelyn. He staged it.”

I stared down at the passport photo. The man staring back at me shared the familiar sharp cheekbones and piercing grey eyes of the Vance family, but his expression was cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of warmth.

“Why?” I asked, my voice barely audible above the ticking grandfather clock in the corner. “Why would Victor fake his own death and disappear for thirty-five years only to resurface now?”

“Because thirty-five years ago, right before his supposed 'accident,' Victor was facing federal indictment for massive embezzlement from the original family shipping enterprise,” Arthur explained, turning the page to reveal old legal indictments. “Thomas covered up the scandal to protect the family name, bought out Victor’s shares for pennies, and quietly forced him out of the company. Victor vanished with a small fortune, retreated offshore, and spent the last three decades quietly rebuilding a massive, ruthless global financial empire specifically designed for one ultimate purpose.”

“To destroy the Vance dynasty,” I finished softly, the terrible truth crystallizing in my mind.

“Exactly,” Arthur nodded. “Richard was just a clumsy amateur playing checkers compared to Victor. Victor plays multi-dimensional chess with billion-dollar corporations. And right now, he has quietly acquired controlling debt stakes in all our primary European suppliers and real estate holdings.”

Instead of feeling paralyzed by fear, I felt a familiar, electric surge of adrenaline rush through my veins. The stakes had just been raised to the absolute highest level possible. This wasn't merely a corporate dispute anymore—it was a generational blood feud.

“So,” I said, slowly closing the dossier and looking up with eyes shining with unyielding resolve. “Victor thinks he’s coming home to claim a kingdom that was legally dissolved decades ago.”

“What are your orders, Evelyn?” Arthur asked quietly.

“Tell Margaret to prepare a formal corporate challenge in the International Court of Arbitration,” I commanded, my voice ringing out with absolute authority. “And send a personal message to Victor Vance from me.”

“What message?” Arthur asked, pausing with his hand on the door handle.

“Tell him the queen is still on the board, and she’s ready for his move.”
