Chapter 8 - Checkmate at the Dinner Table

A private waiter dressed in a crisp black tuxedo quietly entered the dining room, pouring two glasses of sparkling mineral water before disappearing back through the heavy oak doors, leaving Richard and me alone in the opulent silence.

Richard steepled his fingers together, resting his elbows on the polished mahogany table with a triumphant gleam in his eyes. He leaned forward, clearly eager to deliver his masterstroke.

“Very well, Evelyn. Let’s talk business,” Richard began, his voice dripping with condescending confidence. “You’re an intelligent woman. You know the writing is on the wall. Your son is in federal custody, your family trust has taken a massive public relations hit, and managing a multi-million-dollar hotel empire from an upstairs bedroom is no longer tenable.”

“Go on,” I said calmly, sipping my sparkling water without breaking eye contact.

“Apex Global Investments is prepared to make you a generous buyout offer for your controlling shares in the Vance Grand Hotel group,” Richard continued, flashing a predatory grin. “Pennies on the dollar, of course, given your compromised position and legal liabilities. But it will give you enough cash to live out your remaining years in quiet comfort somewhere nice... say, a luxury nursing facility in Florida.”

He paused, waiting for me to shatter into tears, to slam my fists on the table, or to beg for mercy just like his manipulated pawn, Daniel, had done.

Instead, I threw my head back and let out a crisp, genuine laugh that echoed off the crystal chandeliers.

Richard’s smug smile instantly vanished. His eyebrows knitted together in sudden confusion. “What’s so funny?”

“Oh, Richard,” I smiled, shaking my head with mild amusement. “You really are your father’s youngest son—all ambition, zero vision, and completely incapable of reading the room.”

“Watch your tone, Evelyn,” Richard snapped, his polished facade cracking slightly. “You’re in no position to mock me. I hold all the cards here.”

“Do you?” I asked softly.

With a flick of my wrist, I lifted a sleek leather folder from my lap and slid it smoothly across the mahogany table toward him. The gold-embossed lettering on the cover read: *Sloan & Associates Corporate Restructuring & Debt Consolidation.*

Richard stared at the folder suspiciously, making no move to touch it. “What is this?”

“Open it, Richard,” I invited sweetly. “Consider it a late family dinner gift.”

Frowning deeply, Richard reached out, flipped open the heavy leather cover, and began scanning the dense financial documents inside. As his eyes scanned the first page, the color drained completely from his face. His hands began to tremble noticeably, and the breath hitched in his throat.

“This... this is impossible,” Richard gasped, looking up at me with sheer terror in his eyes. “You... you bought up our syndicated debt? How? That was held across three offshore banking institutions in Zurich and the Caymans!”

“Nothing stays hidden forever when you hire the best forensic accountants on Wall Street, Richard,” I said, my voice dropping to a smooth, chilling register. “You thought you were quietly acquiring my hotel empire through Apex Global Investments. But while you were busy funding Daniel’s extravagant yacht trips and plotting my financial demise, Arthur Vance and Margaret Sloan were quietly buying up ninety-four percent of Apex’s underlying corporate bonds.”

Richard stood up so violently his chair crashed backward onto the hardwood floor with a deafening crash. “You can’t do this! That’s hostile! That’s illegal!”

“Illegal?” I arched an eyebrow, rolling my motorized chair slightly closer to the edge of the table. “Everything in that folder was executed strictly according to federal securities law, signed off by federal judges, and witnessed by three separate banking regulators. As of 8:00 PM tonight, Apex Global Investments is officially in default.”

Richard clutched the edges of the table, his knuckles turning stark white as he stared at me like I was a ghost. “Default? But that means... that means you own Apex. You own my holding company. You own everything.”

May you like

“Correct,” I smiled coldly. “Which means by tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, my first official executive order as the new majority owner of Apex Global Investments will be to strip you of your title, freeze all your personal assets, and initiate a full criminal investigation into your twenty-year embezzlement scheme against our family estate.”

The room spun around Richard. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out—only a choked, desperate gasp. The predator had finally realized, too late, that he had walked directly into the center of a widow’s web.
