Chapter 2 - The Setup

The first twenty-four hours trapped upstairs were designed to break me, or so Daniel and Kendra must have assumed when they plotted their tropical getaway. But they severely underestimated the endurance of a woman who had survived corporate boardrooms filled with sharks wearing expensive Italian suits.
I spent the initial hours organizing my counterattack. Using the encrypted satellite phone, I spoke at length with Margaret Sloan and our chief forensic accountant, Arthur Vance. We mapped out a comprehensive, airtight legal strategy that would systematically dismantle Daniel’s entire lifestyle down to the very last penny.
“Are you sure you want to trigger the forfeiture clause, Mrs. Vance?” Arthur asked, sounding slightly hesitant over the speakerphone. “It will freeze every single line of credit, revoke all subsidiary permissions, and immediately report any unauthorized asset liquidation as grand larceny.”
“Arthur,” I replied, my tone icy and resolute. “My son just sold my custom medical equipment to buy himself tropical cocktails, leaving me stranded on a hardwood floor with a bottle of warm tap water and a stale pack of crackers. Trigger every single clause. Show him no mercy whatsoever.”
“Consider it done,” Arthur murmured with a sharp intake of breath. “The financial lockdown will initiate precisely at midnight, coordinated with local law enforcement notifications.”
While Arthur and Margaret worked their magic in downtown Manhattan and our local county seat, I focused on my immediate survival. Using my arms to haul myself inch by grueling inch across the expansive bedroom suite, I managed to reach the en-suite master bathroom. By pulling open vanity drawers and using towels as leverage, I hoisted myself up enough to access the emergency medical kit and a spare landline phone plugged into the guest network.
By day two, my upper body muscles ached with a deep, burning fire, but my resolve had never been sharper. I ordered gourmet groceries online using a secondary corporate account that Daniel didn't even know existed, having them delivered strictly to the back service entrance with explicit instructions for the delivery driver to leave the boxes on the back porch step. Although I still couldn't get downstairs to bring them inside myself, I knew I could survive on the stash of protein bars and dried fruit I kept tucked away in my walk-in closet.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Cancún, Mexico, Daniel and Kendra were living their absolute best lives. Through the power of social media and public geotags—which I monitored comfortably from my tablet—I watched their unfolding digital footprint with grim amusement.
They had checked into an ultra-exclusive luxury resort suite overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Photos posted to Instagram showed Daniel sipping a vibrant blue cocktail garnished with a tiny paper umbrella, lounging on a white-sand beach with Kendra draped across his shoulder in a microscopic designer bikini.
“Living the dream! No stress, no nagging, just pure paradise,” Daniel’s smug caption read beneath a photo of him holding up a gold-plated credit card.
Little did my dear, foolish son know that gold-plated card was already ticking down its final hours of validity.
On day three of their luxurious vacation, Daniel decided to treat Kendra to an extravagant private sunset yacht charter. According to the resort’s online activity logs which my private investigator friend accessed, they had reserved a sixty-foot Italian motor yacht complete with a private chef, free-flowing champagne, and a professional photographer.
The total bill for the afternoon excursion came out to a staggering twelve thousand four hundred dollars—charged directly to the primary household trust card that Daniel believed gave him infinite, unchecked financial freedom.
I smiled quietly in my quiet upstairs bedroom, sipping a cup of herbal tea I had managed to heat up using a small travel kettle I kept hidden in my closet.
“Enjoy the yacht ride, Daniel,” I whispered to the empty room. “Because the anchor is about to drop hard.”
True to our meticulous schedule, exactly at 12:01 AM on the fourth day of their trip, the master trust protection protocols executed across every major banking institution in the country. The primary household card was flagged not merely as declined, but as locked due to suspected fraudulent conversion of estate assets.

Simultaneously, local police detectives armed with a signed affidavit from Margaret Sloan and video evidence of Daniel stealing and selling my custom wheelchair pulled up to our estate gates. They conducted a swift raid on the property, tracking down the buyer who purchased my wheelchair via Facebook Marketplace. Within three hours, the buyer was interviewed, realized he had purchased stolen medical property, and happily cooperated with authorities, pointing straight at Daniel’s digital profile and bank transfers.
The trap was fully set. All that remained was waiting for the dynamic duo to return from paradise, blissfully unaware that their glittering castle of cards was about to collapse into dust.
