Chapter 3 - The Airport Ambush

The international arrivals terminal at the county regional airport was buzzing with the chaotic energy of weary travelers dragging heavy luggage and rushing toward waiting taxis. The humid afternoon air carried the faint scent of jet fuel and overpriced terminal coffee.

Flight 404 from Cancún had just touched down on the tarmac, and passengers were streaming through the automatic sliding glass doors into the main atrium. Among them were Daniel and Kendra, looking wonderfully tanned, slightly sunburnt, and dripping with an arrogant sense of entitlement.

Daniel wore his designer sunglasses indoors, walking with a swagger that suggested he owned the entire eastern seaboard. Kendra strolled beside him, clutching a giant duty-free shopping bag filled with expensive French perfumes and imported Swiss chocolates.

“Babe, I’m telling you, we should extend our stay by another three days,” Daniel laughed, tossing his car keys lightly in the air. “Who cares about the old lady? She probably didn’t even notice we were gone. She loves sitting in that dark room staring at the garden anyway.”

“As long as the credit cards work, I’m down for anything,” Kendra giggled, linking her arm tightly through his. “That yacht trip yesterday was literal perfection. I’m never flying economy again.”

They stepped out through the automatic doors into the bright afternoon sunlight, heading directly toward the short-term parking lot where Daniel had left his luxury sedan parked in a VIP spot.

As they rounded the corner of terminal pillar number four, two sleek black unmarked SUVs suddenly screeched to a halt, blocking their path forward and backward. Four uniformed police officers stepped out in rapid succession, their expressions grim and purposeful.

Daniel froze dead in his tracks, his sunglasses sliding slightly down the bridge of his nose. “What the hell is this? Hey, watch it! Do you know who I am?”

“Daniel Vance?” the lead detective asked crisply, stepping forward and flashing a gold shield. “And Kendra Hayes?”

“Yeah, so what?” Daniel scoffed, puffing out his chest with righteous indignation. “Is this some kind of sick joke? We just got back from an international flight, we’re jet-lagged, and we need to get home. Move your cars right now or I’ll call my mother’s high-priced lawyers to sue the badges off your uniforms.”

The detective let out a dry, humorless chuckle. “That’s funny, Mr. Vance, because your mother’s high-priced lawyers are the exact reason we’re standing here right now.”

“What are you talking about?” Kendra shrieked, dropping her duty-free shopping bag onto the concrete with a loud shatter of broken glass. “We didn’t do anything wrong! We just took a harmless vacation!”

“Harmless vacation?” the detective repeated, pulling a thick stack of legal documents and arrest warrants from his tactical vest. “You are both being placed under arrest for grand larceny of disabled medical equipment, unauthorized liquidation of protected trust assets, financial elder abuse, and willful abandonment of a dependent senior citizen.”

The world seemed to stop spinning on its axis for Daniel. The color drained entirely from his tanned face, leaving him looking like a ghost in broad daylight.

“Grand larceny? Elder abuse? Are you insane?” Daniel yelled, struggling violently as two officers grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic snap.

“Get your hands off me! Do you know who my mother is? Evelyn Vance! She’ll have your jobs by the end of the day!” Kendra screamed, flailing wildly as female officer pinned her wrists as well.

“Oh, we know exactly who Evelyn Vance is,” the detective said smoothly, pulling out a pair of digital tablets showing high-resolution security footage and signed affidavits. “In fact, she’s the one who personally signed the arrest warrants this morning from her upstairs window.”

Daniel’s jaw dropped so low it practically touched the pavement. “My... my mother signed warrants? But... but she’s trapped upstairs! She doesn’t even have a wheelchair!”

“Correction, Mr. Vance,” a calm, aristocratic voice echoed from the open sliding door of the second unmarked SUV. Margaret Sloan stepped out, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit and holding a leather briefcase. “She doesn't have *your* stolen wheelchair anymore. But thanks to local law enforcement, she is doing just fine.”

Daniel stared at the attorney in sheer, unadulterated horror. “Margaret? You... you’re working against us?”

May you like

“I have worked exclusively for Evelyn Vance and the Thomas Vance Estate for over twenty-two years, Daniel,” Margaret said, her voice dripping with absolute disdain. “You were merely an unfortunate byproduct of her maternal patience. And that patience officially expired the moment you left her stranded on a bedroom floor.”

As the police officers shoved Daniel and Kendra into the back of separate patrol cruisers, the flashing red and blue lights reflected off the sleek glass windows of the terminal. Daniel looked out through the wire mesh of the cruiser window, finally realizing the terrifying magnitude of his catastrophic mistake.
