Chapter 17 - A Voice from the Cell

The message was short, typed cleanly through the prison's monitored legal communication portal:

*Claire,*

*I watched the news broadcast about Arthur Sterling's trial yesterday from the prison dayroom.*

*For the first time, I finally understood the full, monstrous scale of the trap I walked into twelve years ago. I thought I was being clever, climbing the corporate ladder and building an empire. In reality, I was just a blind pawn dancing on strings pulled by a monster.*

*I don't expect forgiveness, and I don't deserve an answer to this message. But I wanted you to know that I signed the final transfer paperwork yesterday relinquishing my remaining trust funds into Noah's secure educational endowment.*

*You were right about everything, Claire. You were the strongest, smartest person in any room we ever entered, and I was too arrogant to see it until I had lost everything.*

*I hope you and Noah have found the peace and happiness you so richly deserve.*

*— Daniel.*

I locked the screen of the tablet and handed it back to my assistant without saying a word.

"Do you want me to file a formal block on future messages from his terminal?" she asked quietly.

"No," I replied, gazing back out toward the ocean where Noah was building a magnificent sandcastle near the surf. "Let it be. Some ghosts don't need to be locked away; they just need to fade into the background where they belong."

She nodded respectfully and walked back toward the beach house, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

The yellow envelope that had arrived on my dining room table months ago felt like a lifetime away now.

It had sparked a war, exposed a multi-decade criminal conspiracy, brought down corrupt billionaires, and ultimately forged an unbreakable shield of independence and strength around my son and me.

I walked down the sandy slope toward Noah, who was waving excitedly for me to come join his construction project.

"Mommy, look! I built the tallest tower in the whole world! And the ocean can't wash it away because I built a stone wall around it!" he shouted proudly.

May you like

I smiled, kneeling down beside him in the warm sand and helping him place the final decorative seashell on top of his sandcastle tower.

"That's the strongest wall I've ever seen, Captain Noah," I whispered, kissing his cheek. "Nothing will ever break through it."
