Chapter 5 - The Secret Visitor

Wednesday evening brought a heavy, torrential downpour that battered the reinforced glass windows of our penthouse sanctuary.

Noah was fast asleep in his bedroom, happily dreaming away, blissfully shielded from the chaotic legal war raging around us.

I was sitting in the dimly lit study, reviewing property deeds and trust documents, when the private elevator chime chimed softly in the hallway.

Only three people possessed the private cryptographic key to this elevator: Evelyn Hart, my security detail leader, and me.

I stood up instantly, my hand sliding toward the concealed panic button on the underside of the mahogany desk, as heavy footsteps approached the double doors.

The door pushed open slowly, revealing not Evelyn or a security guard, but a tall, imposing figure dripping wet from the rain.

It was Marcus Vale.

The billionaire government contractor whose name was currently synonymous with national corruption scandals stood in my doorway, looking intensely dangerous.

"How did you find this address, Marcus?" I asked, my voice steady and completely devoid of fear as I locked eyes with him.

Marcus offered a cold, humorless smirk, stepping into the room and shaking water from his expensive trench coat. "Please, Claire. You may have outsmarted Daniel like a chess grandmaster, but you didn't really think your shell company paper trail was completely invisible to professional intelligence operators, did you?"

"You're trespassing in a secure residential building, and my security team is currently downstairs," I warned calmly, my finger resting lightly near the panic button.

"Your security team has already been generously compensated to look the other way for ten minutes, Claire," Marcus said smoothly, taking a seat uninvited in the leather armchair across my desk.

I did not blink. "What do you want, Marcus? You're facing twenty years in federal prison for municipal bribery and bid-rigging. Coming here won't save your empire."

"I'm not here to save my empire. That ship has already hit the iceberg thanks to your little dossier delivered to the U.S. Attorney's office," Marcus admitted, leaning forward, his eyes narrowing sharply. "I'm here because you hold something extremely valuable that I need back before the federal grand jury convenes on Friday."

"And what would that be?" I asked, arching an eyebrow.

"The original encrypted flash drive containing the unredacted wire transfer logs between Apex Construction and my primary offshore accounts," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly tone. "Give me the drive, and I ensure that Daniel takes the absolute fall for every single illegal transaction, while you walk away with every penny of his remaining personal wealth intact."

I stared at him for a long moment, letting absolute silence stretch across the room.

Then, a slow, icy smile spread across my face. "Marcus... you still don't understand forensic accounting, do you?"

"What are you talking about?" he snapped, his composure slipping slightly.

May you like

"I never kept just one flash drive," I whispered softly. "The moment you stepped foot in this room, my secure cloud server automatically uploaded and broadcasted our entire conversation directly to the lead federal prosecutor."

Marcus's face drained of all color in a single microsecond.
