Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs

Marcus froze, his hand hovering mid-air as the terrifying reality of what I had just said washed over him.

"You... you recording this?" he hissed, lunging forward toward my desk with sudden, violent desperation.

Before his hands could touch the edge of the mahogany wood, the heavy double doors of my study burst open with explosive force.

Three heavily armed federal marshals rushed into the room, their tactical gear flashing under the dim lights as they pinned Marcus face-down onto the plush rug in a matter of seconds.

"Marcus Vale, you are under arrest for federal witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and ongoing public corruption," Agent Miller announced loudly, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Marcus's wrists with practiced efficiency.

Marcus thrashed against the floor, glaring up at me with pure, unadulterated venom as they dragged him toward the private elevator. "You think you've won, Claire? Your husband is going to ruin you anyway! He knows secrets about your family you wouldn't believe!"

"Take him out of my sight," I commanded coldly, not giving his empty threats the satisfaction of a reaction.

The elevator doors closed, sealing Marcus away and returning the penthouse to absolute, heavy silence.

My heart was beating slightly faster than normal, but my hands remained entirely steady as I closed the laptop lid and sank back into my leather chair.

Daniel knew family secrets? For six months, Daniel had been so absorbed in his corporate arrogance and his affair with Vanessa that he barely knew what day of the week it was.

Yet, as midnight approached, Marcus’s parting words continued to echo irritatingly in the back of my mind.

My phone buzzed again. This time, it was an encrypted text message from Evelyn.

*Just got word from federal dispatch. Marcus Vale's arrest triggered a massive midnight sweep. Several city council members connected to his bribery ring have already resigned. Your husband is completely isolated.*

I replied: *Good. Have the formal divorce settlement papers ready for his signature by sunrise. I want this completely finalized before the weekend.*

*Will do, boss,* Evelyn texted back instantly. *By the way, Daniel has been sitting outside your old suburban estate in his car for the past four hours in the rain. He looks like a ghost.*

Let him sit in the rain, I thought bitterly. It was nothing compared to the emotional freezing he had subjected Noah and me to for over half a year.

I stood up, walked over to Noah’s bedroom door, and gently pushed it open to check on him.

My son was sleeping peacefully, clutching his favorite stuffed teddy bear, entirely safe and warm.

I whispered a silent vow into the dark room: *No matter what secrets Daniel thinks he's hiding, nobody will ever hurt us again.*
