Chapter 7 - The Final Ultimatum

Thursday morning dawned crisp and bright, washing the city in a brilliant golden sunlight that belied the cutthroat corporate war raging beneath the surface.

Evelyn Hart arrived at our penthouse sharply at eight o'clock, carrying a thick leather briefcase stuffed with final settlement documents and asset division agreements.

"Good morning, Claire," Evelyn said briskly, accepting a cup of hot coffee from my hands. "Word of Marcus Vale's midnight arrest is already front-page news across every major financial publication. Apex Construction's stock has plummeted by forty-two percent in early pre-market trading."

"And Daniel?" I asked, sitting across from her at the glass table.

"He's currently holed up in a cheap motel near the highway, completely abandoned by his legal team, his mistress, and his business associates," Evelyn replied with a triumphant grin. "He signed a waiver allowing us to serve him directly at noon today. If he refuses to sign the final divorce decree and asset relinquishment, the federal prosecutor will immediately tack on conspiracy charges related to the Vale bribery syndicate."

"He won't refuse," I said calmly. "Daniel loves his freedom and his remaining comfort far more than he ever loved Vanessa—or me."

At precisely twelve o'clock, Evelyn and I walked into a private conference room at Evelyn's downtown law firm, where Daniel was already waiting.

When the heavy wooden door opened, Daniel looked like a shell of the confident corporate executive who had kissed my forehead on Monday morning.

His navy suit was permanently stained from the rain, his hair was unwashed, and his eyes were bloodshot and hollow.

He looked up, and when his gaze met mine, a flicker of pure desperation mixed with intense hatred crossed his face.

"Claire... please," he rasped, standing up unsteadily from his chair. "You can't do this to me. We built this life together. Twelve years of marriage... down the drain because of a mistake—"

"A mistake is forgetting your anniversary or missing a dinner reservation, Daniel," I interrupted coldly, my voice ringing with absolute authority. "Embezzling millions, laundering corporate funds through your mistress's shell company, and conspiring with corrupt government contractors is not a mistake. It's a calculated criminal lifestyle."

Evelyn slid the thick document folder across the mahogany table, stopping it right in front of his trembling hands.

"Sign on page twelve, page twenty-four, and initial every asset transfer schedule," Evelyn instructed clinical and flat. "By signing, you relinquish all claims to the primary residential estate, seventy percent of Apex Construction's remaining unencumbered equity, and you grant Claire full, uncontested sole legal and physical custody of Noah."

Daniel stared at the papers as if they were venomous snakes.

"Sole custody?" he choked out, his voice cracking with sudden rage. "You're taking my son away from me completely?!"

May you like

"You forfeited your right to be a father the moment you decided to risk our family's entire financial security for a corrupt corporate mistress and dirty money," I said, leaning forward, my eyes locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity.

"Sign the papers, Daniel, or spend the next twenty years sharing a jail cell with Marcus Vale."
