Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The glass-walled executive boardroom of Apex Construction felt more like a cage than a seat of power on Tuesday morning.
Daniel sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, looking pale, exhausted, and visibly disheveled. The tailored navy suit from yesterday was wrinkled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes.
Around the table sat the five members of the board of directors, including Arthur Sterling, the elderly patriarch who had co-founded the company with my father twenty years ago.
"Daniel, you need to explain to this board right now why our primary operational accounts have been frozen by judicial order, and why federal investigators are currently downstairs auditing our municipal project files," Arthur demanded, slamming his hand onto the polished wood.
"It's a misunderstanding! A malicious, vindictive stunt by my disgruntled wife!" Daniel stammered, forcing a desperate smile that failed to reach his eyes. "Claire is going through a temporary emotional breakdown. We are handling it privately."
"Private?" shouted Richard Vance, the head of corporate finance. "Federal agents don't raid corporate headquarters over a domestic dispute, Daniel! Half of our municipal contracts have been suspended because of suspicious shell company disbursements to a 'V.C. Holdings'! Care to explain who that is?"
Daniel opened his mouth to lie, but before a single word could escape his lips, the heavy oak boardroom doors swung wide open.
Evelyn Hart walked into the room with calm, measured authority, followed closely by two federal agents in dark suits bearing federal identification badges.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Evelyn announced smoothly, taking a seat at the empty chair next to Daniel. "I am Attorney Evelyn Hart, representing Claire Sterling, majority shareholder and legal co-owner of Apex Construction."
Daniel leapt out of his chair, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. "You have no right to be here! Security! Throw them out!"
"Sit down, Daniel," one of the federal agents commanded coldly, flashing his badge directly in Daniel's face. "Special Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Unit. You are not currently under arrest, but you are subject to an immediate administrative subpoena and asset restraint order regarding federal fund embezzlement and money laundering."
The board members gasped, several of them violently pushing their chairs back from the table in sheer horror.
"This is insane! My wife set me up! This is a conspiracy!" Daniel shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at Evelyn.
"Your wife, Daniel, happens to be a licensed forensic accountant who meticulously documented every single fraudulent wire transfer you executed over the past twenty-four months," Evelyn stated clearly, placing a thick, bound financial dossier in front of Arthur Sterling.
Arthur opened the dossier with trembling hands. Inside were exact bank routing numbers, IP addresses from Daniel's personal home computer, signed contracts with Thomas Cole's shell company, and incriminating email exchanges between Daniel and Vanessa.
"My God, Daniel... you embezzled millions from our own development funds?" Arthur whispered, looking at him with utter disgust and betrayal.
"Arthur, please, listen to me—Vanessa manipulated me! She forced me into it!" Daniel cried out, completely shattering under the weight of exposure.

"Vanessa Cole has already been picked up by federal marshals at her apartment an hour ago, Mr. Sterling," Agent Miller noted flatly. "She was packing two suitcases full of cash and attempting to board a private flight to Zurich."
Daniel collapsed back into his executive chair, his hands trembling violently as he buried his face in his palms. The mighty CEO of Apex Construction had been completely dismantled in less than twenty-four hours.
