Chapter 14 - The Wall Street Trap

The morning of the public share offering arrived with dramatic intensity across global financial markets.

At 6:00 AM Pacific Time, as the New York Stock Exchange opened, Victor Sterling sat in his high-tech command center in Zurich, Switzerland, surrounded by sixteen financial analysts and trading screens.

"Execute Phase One!" Victor ordered sharply into his headset. "Dump two million synthetic short shares of Vale Global stock on the open market immediately! Flood the financial blogs with the supply chain labor allegations!"

Within seconds, the financial news tickers went red: VALE GLOBAL STOCK DROPS 15% AT OPENING BELL AMID UNVERIFIED LABOR ALLEGATIONS.

On Wall Street, panic broke out among minor retail traders. Stock algorithms began automatically selling off shares as the price fell from $120 a share down to $85, then $60, then $45 in less than thirty minutes.

Victor Sterling laughed maniacally in his Zurich office, pouring a glass of expensive champagne. "Look at it collapse! Grant Vale is finished! Execute Phase Two! Short another five million shares! Drive the stock down to ten dollars and force his debt covenants to trigger!"

In San Francisco, inside the trading control room at Vale Global Holdings, Sarah Lin and Eli Thorne sat monitoring the live market feeds.

"The stock just hit forty dollars, Mr. Vale!" Sarah reported, her heart pounding despite knowing the plan. "Victor’s fund has shorted over fifteen million shares! He’s overexposed by nearly six billion dollars!"

Grant Vale stood calmly behind them, looking at his watch. "Has the International Labor Organization published their official supply chain report yet?"

Right on cue, Eli’s computer screen flashed bright green. "It just hit the Bloomberg terminal, sir! The ILO has issued a total clean bill of health, certifying our supply chains as one hundred percent ethical, while calling out Victor Sterling’s fund for fraudulent market manipulation!"

"Now, Mr. Vale?" Sarah asked, her finger hovering over the primary buy button.

Grant’s dark eyes flashed with brilliant authority. "Authorize the Singapore Reserve. Buy back every single share of Vale Global stock on the open market right now."

At 6:42 AM, a massive financial tidal wave hit Wall Street.

A ten-billion-dollar buy order executed instantaneously. Vale Global’s trading volume exploded. Within four minutes, every single share that Victor Sterling had shorted was bought up at bottom-dollar prices by Grant Vale’s private reserve.

On the trading floor in Zurich, sirens and warning alarms began blaring across Victor Sterling’s screens.

"Sir!" a frantic senior analyst screamed in horror. "Someone just bought ten billion dollars’ worth of shares! The market float is completely gone! There are no available shares left to buy back!"

Victor’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor. "What? Who bought them?"

"Vale Global bought them!" the analyst shrieked in total panic. "They had a secret ten-billion-dollar cash reserve in Singapore! Sir, the stock is skyrocketing! It’s at $150! $200! $350!"

The short squeeze was violent and instant. Because Victor Sterling was legally required to cover his fifteen-million-share short position, he was forced to buy back shares at $350 a share that he had shorted at $40.

"Sir!" the analyst wept. "Our fund has lost four point two billion dollars in twenty minutes! The Swiss Banking Authority has frozen our liquidity! We are totally insolvent!"

Victor Sterling collapsed back into his leather chair, his face ghostly white, his chest heaving in total horror. He had tried to crush Grant Vale with global market power, only to be totally annihilated in less than one hour.

In San Francisco, the trading room at Vale Global erupted into thunderous cheers and applause. Executive team members hugged each other, throwing papers into the air.

Sarah Lin threw her arms around Eli Thorne, laughing joyfully. "We did it! We completely wiped out Victor Sterling’s fund!"

Grant Vale stood calmly in the middle of the celebrating team, a quiet, peaceful smile on his face. He walked over to Eli, resting a heavy, proud hand on the young man’s shoulder.

"Outstanding work, Eli," Grant said softly. "You helped save this company today."

Eli looked at his mentor, his heart full of boundless gratitude and admiration. "It was an honor, Mr. Vale. Truth won."

"Truth always wins, Eli," Grant smiled softly. "Now let’s go build those houses for working families."
