Chapter 17 - Promises in the Park

A month after Eli Thorne’s promotion to Associate General Counsel, San Francisco was enveloped in the golden warmth of mid-summer. Golden Gate Park was alive with blooming roses, towering cypress trees, and families enjoying the clear afternoon air.

Grant Vale walked slowly along the stone path near the Japanese Tea Garden, holding hands with Dr. Maya Lin. The gentle breeze rustled the surrounding leaves, casting dappled sunlight across the quiet walkway.

Maya looked up at Grant, her dark eyes sparkling with quiet amusement. "You’ve been unusually quiet all afternoon, Grant. Are you thinking about corporate acquisitions again?"

Grant chuckled softly, stopping near a quiet wooden footbridge overlooking a lily pond. "Not today, Maya. For the first time in ten years, my mind isn’t on corporate strategy at all."

"Then what are you thinking about?" she asked, stepping closer to him, her hands resting gently against his jacket.

Grant reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. Maya’s breath caught in her throat as her eyes widened in surprise.

Grant dropped down onto one knee on the smooth stone path, looking up at her with profound warmth, sincerity, and love.

"Maya," Grant said softly, his voice echoing with deep emotion. "When I first met you, I was a man who had built high financial walls to protect himself from a world filled with shallow ambition. You showed me that real love isn’t a transaction, and true value isn’t something you buy—it’s something you share. You make my life complete. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy welled up in Maya’s eyes as a brilliant smile broke across her face. "Yes, Grant! Yes, absolutely yes!"

Grant stood up, slid a breathtaking, ethically sourced solitaire diamond ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a deep, passionate embrace as the afternoon sun glowed warm around them.

That evening, news of Grant Vale’s engagement to Dr. Maya Lin spread through San Francisco. Unlike his past relationship with Sienna, which had been fueled by high-society gossip and public vanity, this announcement was celebrated across the city as a beautiful union of two people dedicated to genuine charity, medicine, and community service.

Inside his modest apartment, Eli Thorne sat at his desk reviewing corporate documents when his phone rang. It was Martin from Bellwether.

"Eli," Martin said warmly through the receiver. "Mr. Vale has requested that we host a private engagement celebration at Bellwether this Friday night. And he insists that you sit at the head table as part of the family."

Eli felt a lump in his throat, overwhelmed by the constant kindness of his mentor. "Thank you, Martin. I’ll be there."

Meanwhile, down in Daly City, Sienna Brooks finished her evening shift at the community center. She sat on a bench outside the bus stop, holding a copy of the evening newspaper featuring a sweet photo of Grant and Maya smiling together in Golden Gate Park.

Sienna looked at the photo for a long moment. She didn’t feel rage, jealousy, or bitterness anymore. The deep soul-searching she had endured over the past year had transformed her entirely. She genuinely felt happy for Grant. He had found a woman who loved him for his heart, not his wallet.

Sienna folded the paper neatly, placed it in her bag, and stepped onto the arriving bus, ready to continue her quiet, honest life.
