Chapter 9 - Department 402

Monday morning arrived with crisp, razor-sharp clarity as the sun burned away the ocean fog.

By 8:00 AM, the broad granite steps leading up to the San Francisco Superior Courthouse were swarming with over fifty news crews, photojournalists, and curious spectators.

A sleek black limousine pulled up to the curb. Julian Sterling stepped out, wearing a sharply tailored thousand-dollar charcoal suit. Beside him stepped Sienna Brooks, clad in an eye-catching white designer dress, her blonde hair styled in flawless waves. Julian smiled brightly for the flashing news cameras, waving confidently as his legal team escorted them through the roaring crowd.

Moments later, a simple navy sedan pulled up to the entrance. Grant Vale stepped out alone, dressed in his modest navy suit. He offered no flashy smiles to the cameras, made no loud statements to the shouting reporters, and simply walked up the stone steps with calm, dignified stillness.

Inside Department 402, the courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Every wooden bench was filled with real estate executives, news reporters, legal scholars, and curious high-society observers.

At the plaintiff’s table sat Julian Sterling, looking regal and smug, flanked by six prominent attorneys. Sienna sat right beside him, her hands folded neatly on the table, though her pale fingers twitched with hidden nervous energy.

At the defense table sat Grant Vale and his brilliant lead counsel, Sarah Lin. Grant sat quietly, looking straight ahead at the judicial bench.

The heavy wooden door behind the bench opened, and Judge Harrison stepped out wearing his black robes. The entire courtroom stood up in respect as the stern, grey-haired judge took his seat and slammed his heavy wooden gavel down.

"Court is now in session," Judge Harrison announced, his sharp gaze sweeping across the crowded room. "We are here to deliberate on the emergency petition for a temporary asset freeze filed by Sterling Development against Vale Global Holdings. Plaintiff counsel, present your case."

Julian’s lead attorney, Richard Vance, stood up with polished flair. "Thank you, Your Honor. The facts in this case are plain and terrifying. Mr. Grant Vale has systematically constructed a public persona of an ethical investor while secretly utilizing predatory shell corporations to manipulate property valuations and execute fraudulent foreclosures across San Francisco—most notably regarding the Mission Street redevelopment parcel."

Richard dramatically turned toward Sienna. "To prove this pattern of corruption, we have submitted a sworn affidavit from Ms. Sienna Brooks, a highly respected luxury real estate adviser who had intimate personal and professional access to Mr. Vale. Ms. Brooks has sworn under penalty of perjury that Mr. Vale personally confessed to these fraudulent activities during a private dinner at Bellwether!"

Sienna straightened her back, forcing a cold, confident expression onto her face as the room’s attention shifted entirely to her.

Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses, looking down at the legal document before him. "Ms. Brooks, do you reaffirm under penalty of felony perjury that every statement contained in this signed affidavit is completely true and accurate?"

Sienna took a deep breath, looking Judge Harrison straight in the eyes. "I do, Your Honor. Grant Vale confessed everything to me."

Julian Sterling smirked triumphantly, turning to cast a mocking, victorious look at Grant.

Judge Harrison turned his sharp eyes toward the defense table. "Ms. Lin, how does the defense respond to these severe allegations?"

Sarah Lin stood up calmly, holding a single black leather binder. She didn’t look nervous; she looked completely lethal.

"Your Honor," Sarah began in a clear, resonant voice that captured every ear in the room, "we respond by proving that this emergency petition is a disgusting act of legal extortion, built entirely on subornation of perjury and criminal conspiracy."

The courtroom gasped collectively. Julian Sterling’s smirk faltered slightly.

"Watch your language, counsel!" Judge Harrison warned sternly. "You had better have absolute proof to back up a claim like that."

"We have undeniable proof, Your Honor," Sarah declared smoothly, walking forward to present certified documents to the bailiff. "First, regarding the Mission Street acquisition: we have submitted triple-audited bank records proving Mr. Vale paid fifteen percent above fair market value for every single plot, voluntarily distributing an extra four million dollars directly to the original working-class property owners."

Judge Harrison scanned the certified records, his eyebrows rising in surprise.

"Second," Sarah continued, her voice hardening like steel, "regarding the primary witness, Ms. Sienna Brooks."

Sienna’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"At 9:15 AM last Thursday," Sarah revealed, turning to face Sienna directly, "a Nevada shell company named Belden Strategic Holdings—which is secretly managed by Mr. Julian Sterling’s personal lead attorney—executed a direct asset transfer of a two-million-dollar commercial deed directly into a private trust registered under the name of Sienna Brooks."

Sienna’s face drained of every ounce of color. She looked as if she had been slapped across the jaw.

"Furthermore!" Sarah boomed into the quiet room. "Bank transaction timestamps prove that Ms. Brooks signed her sworn affidavit less than two hours after receiving that two-million-dollar deed! This was not honest testimony, Your Honor! This was a paid criminal kickback!"

"What?" Judge Harrison roared, his face turning thunderous red. He slammed his gavel down with terrifying force. "Is this true?"

Julian Sterling panicked, immediately pulling his chair away from Sienna. "Your Honor! My firm was completely unaware of any administrative transfers executed by secondary corporate entities—"

"Silence!" Judge Harrison barked, pointing a furious finger at Sienna. "Ms. Brooks! Stand up right now!"

Sienna tried to stand, but her knees completely buckled beneath her. She grabbed the edge of the wooden table, trembling hysterically, tears bursting through her makeup. "Your Honor... I... I..."

"Did you accept property assets from Mr. Sterling’s attorney prior to signing this affidavit?" Judge Harrison demanded coldly.

Sienna looked around the room in absolute horror. Photographers were capturing every second of her public ruin. Julian Sterling was glaring at her with cold hatred, completely discarding her. She looked across the aisle at Grant Vale. He sat in quiet, dignified sadness, watching her collapse under the weight of her own lies.

"Julian made me do it!" Sienna shrieked frantically, completely breaking down into messy, pathetic sobs. "He promised me my career back! He paid me! I’m sorry! Please, Grant, I’m sorry!"

"Bailiffs!" Judge Harrison commanded loudly, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "Place Ms. Sienna Brooks under immediate arrest for criminal perjury and court fraud!"

Two armed bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Sienna’s arms and snapping heavy iron handcuffs around her wrists. She screamed and cried out as she was dragged down the central aisle of the courtroom in full view of every news camera in San Francisco.

Judge Harrison turned his blazing fury toward Julian Sterling. "As for you, Mr. Sterling. This petition is dismissed with prejudice! Furthermore, I am referring this matter directly to the State Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for corporate conspiracy, extortion, and witness tampering! Get out of my courtroom!"

The courtroom erupted into total bedlam as news reporters scrambled over benches to broadcast the stunning downfall of Julian Sterling and the complete vindication of Grant Vale.
