Chapter 2 - The Sound of Metal

The emergency room doors burst open with a loud bang, and four uniformed police officers flooded the hallway. Leading them was Officer Miller, a no-nonsense veteran who had seen too many domestic disputes turn into tragedies. Dr. Grant unlocked the door, his face grim as he pointed inside.

"In there," Dr. Grant said. "The stepfather is aggressive, and the mother is complicit in covering up severe, systematic physical abuse."

Raymond didn't flinch as the officers entered the small cubicle. He smoothed down the front of his expensive designer polo shirt, putting on a suave, charming smile that he usually reserved for city council meetings.

"Officers, thank God you're here," Raymond said, his voice smooth as silk. "There's been a massive misunderstanding. My daughters had a terrible fall down our spiral staircase tonight. My wife and I rushed them here, and this doctor has completely lost his mind, accusing us of god-knows-what."

Officer Miller looked past Raymond, his eyes landing on Mara and Lily. The sight of the identical twins, covered in severe, deep bruising, wearing nothing but their underwear because their clothes had been cut away for medical examination, made the officer’s jaw tighten.

"Sir, step away from the beds," Miller ordered, his hand resting on his holster.

"Officer, do you know who I am?" Raymond asked, his tone shifting from charming to authoritative. "I am Raymond Vale. I sit on the board of the municipal development fund. I suggest you check your tone before you make a mistake that will cost you your badge."

"I don't care if you're the governor," Miller snapped. "Step back. Now."

Celeste stepped between Raymond and the police, her voice frantic, hysterical. "Please! It was an accident! I saw them fall! They were running and they slipped! Raymond loves them, he would never hurt them!"

Mara looked at her mother, feeling a profound, hollow sense of betrayal. Celeste wasn't just a victim anymore; she was an active participant in their torture, sacrificing her own flesh and blood to protect the lifestyle Raymond provided.

"She's lying," Mara said, her voice clear and resonant, echoing in the cramped space. "She didn't see anything because she was downstairs turning up the TV so the neighbors wouldn't hear us screaming."

"Shut up, Mara!" Celeste shrieked. "How dare you say that after everything we've done for you!"

"We have proof," Lily added, her voice weaker than Mara’s but equally determined. "Check the cloud drive. Daniel Cross's archive. Every single night for three months. It's all there."

Raymond's face underwent a terrifying transformation. The mask of the sophisticated, wealthy businessman completely dissolved, revealing the monster underneath. His eyes widened, veins bulging in his neck. He realized, in a sudden flash of panic, what Mara had meant by 'remembering.'

"You little monsters!" Raymond roared, losing all control. He lunged past Officer Miller, his hands forming claws as he reached for Mara’s throat. "I'll kill you! I'll finish what I started!"

"Get him down!" Miller shouted.

The room erupted into chaos. The three other officers tackled Raymond before his fingers could touch Mara’s skin. Raymond fought with brutal, manic strength, kicking over a tray of medical instruments that crashed to the floor with a deafening metallic clatter. He screamed profanities, his face turning a deep, angry purple.

"Let go of me! Do you know who I am? I'll destroy all of you!" Raymond bellowed as he was forced face-down onto the cold linoleum floor.

The officers pinned his arms behind his back, the heavy click of steel handcuffs echoing through the room. Celeste was screaming, covering her face in horror, watching her powerful husband being humiliated and subdued.

Dr. Grant quickly stepped in front of Mara and Lily, shielding them from the violent spectacle. "Get him out of my ER," the doctor ordered fiercely.

As Raymond was dragged out in handcuffs, still yelling threats, he glared back at the twins. His eyes promised death.

Officer Miller stayed behind, pulling out a notepad. He looked at Mara, his expression softening with deep pity and respect. "You girls are safe now. But I need you to tell me exactly how to access those recordings. If what you're saying is true, we're going to put that monster away for a very long time."

Mara looked at the door where Raymond had been dragged away, then down at her intertwined hand with Lily. The physical danger was temporarily gone, but she knew Raymond's money and influence would buy him the best legal defense team in the country. The real war was just beginning, and they had to survive the fallout.
