Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The federal building in downtown corporate district was buzzing with activity. Raymond Vale and Julian Vance were being held in separate, high-security interrogation rooms on the top floor, undergoing intense questioning by federal prosecutors and military intelligence officers.

Mara, Lily, and Uncle Adrian sat in a private viewing room behind a one-way mirror, watching Raymond pace like a caged animal. He was sweating through his expensive suit, his hands shaking as he desperately tried to negotiate with the stoic FBI agents across the table.

"I have names," Raymond was saying, his voice frantic, cracking. "I can give you the entire city council. I can give you three state senators who took bribes for the highway expansion project. Just give me a deal. Confinement in a minimum-security facility. No asset forfeiture."

The federal agent didn't even look up from his notepad. "Mr. Vale, you are facing charges under the RICO act, federal money laundering, bribery of a federal judge, and first-degree murder of a federal contractor, Daniel Cross. You have zero leverage. The state senators you mentioned? We arrested them two hours ago based on Daniel Cross’s backup files. You aren't the big fish anymore. You're just bait."

Raymond collapsed back into his chair, staring blankly at the table. His empire had crumbled into dust in less than twenty-four hours.

In the adjacent interrogation room, Julian Vance was already signing a full confession, desperately trying to save himself from a life sentence. He was detail-mapping every single financial crime Raymond had committed over the last decade, including the exact poison used to simulate Daniel Cross’s fatal heart attack—a rare, untraceable digitalis derivative imported from an illicit supplier in Europe.

"It's over, girls," Adrian said, putting his hands on his nieces' shoulders. "The DA is filing formal murder charges tomorrow morning. Raymond and Julian will spend the rest of their lives in a federal maximum-security penitentiary. They will never see the sun again."

Lily let out a long, shaky breath, leaning her head against Mara’s shoulder. "What about Mom?"

Adrian’s expression softened, but his voice remained firm. "Celeste made her choice a long time ago. She signed a cooperation agreement an hour ago, pleading guilty to accessory after the fact and perjury. Because she confessed and provided details on how Raymond forced her to sign the false affidavit, the prosecutor is recommending a reduced sentence of seven years. She won't go to a maximum-security prison, but she will have to pay for what she did to you both."

The door to the viewing room opened, and Celeste was led out by a female marshal, her wrists bound in light transport cuffs. She stopped when she saw Mara and Lily through the open door. Her face was red, tear-stained, and completely broken.

"Mara... Lily..." Celeste sobbed, taking a step toward them before the marshal gently held her back. "Please... forgive me. I was so scared of him. He told me he would kill you both if I didn't do what he said. I thought I was keeping you alive."

Mara looked at her biological mother, feeling a profound sadness, but no anger. The time for anger had passed. "You weren't keeping us alive, Mom. You were watching us die slowly every single night just so you could keep your beautiful clothes and your big house. We survived because we protected each other. Not because of you."

Celeste cried out, a broken, desperate sound, as the marshal led her down the hallway toward the transport elevator.

Lily wiped a tear from her eye. "Do you think we'll ever forgive her, Mara?"

"Maybe someday," Mara said softly, taking Lily's hand. "But right now, we don't have to worry about her anymore. Tomorrow is our eighteenth birthday, Lily. It’s time for us to finally start living our own lives."
