Chapter 9 - The Rebirth of the Cross Twins

The morning sun rose over the city, casting a warm, golden glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a beautiful luxury penthouse overlooking the harbor. It was a stark contrast to the sterile, terrifying rooms of Raymond Vale's estate or the cramped hospital beds.
Today was Mara and Lily’s eighteenth birthday.
The main living space was filled with beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers, balloons, and a large, elegant birthday cake with eighteen glowing candles. Uncle Adrian stood by the kitchen island, pouring glasses of fresh orange juice, a massive, proud smile on his face.
"Happy birthday, ladies," Adrian said as Mara and Lily walked down the stairs. They were dressed in beautiful, elegant casual dresses—Mara in a deep emerald green, Lily in a soft sapphire blue. Their physical bruises had completely faded, replaced by the natural, radiant glow of youth and absolute freedom.
"Thank you, Uncle Adrian," Lily said, rushing over to hug him tight. "This is the first real birthday party we've had in four years."
"And it's about to get even better," a sharp voice called out from the foyer.
Avery Vance walked into the living room, carrying a thick, leather-bound legal folder. She had a rare, warm smile on her face. "Sorry to crash the party, but the probate judge just finalized the paperwork. The Cross Trust is officially unlocked and fully transferred to your exclusive control."
She placed the folder on the table, opening it to reveal the bank statements and corporate share transfer certificates. "As of 9:00 AM today, Mara and Lily Cross are the sole executives of a fortune valued at forty-two million dollars. Every single asset owned by Raymond Vale has been seized under federal forfeiture laws, and the court has ordered that his entire real estate portfolio be liquidated to pay restitution directly to you both for physical and emotional damages."
Mara looked at the numbers on the page, but she didn't feel a sense of overwhelming greed. She felt a profound sense of closure. Her father's hard work, his brilliant mind, and his ultimate sacrifice had finally fulfilled its purpose: ensuring his daughters’ safety and complete independence.
"We don't want the money just sitting in a bank, Avery," Mara said, looking at her sister, who nodded in immediate agreement. "We've already talked about what we want to do with it."
"Oh? Let's hear it," Avery said, leaning against the counter, highly intrigued.
"We are establishing the Daniel Cross Foundation for Victim Protection," Lily announced proudly. "We are going to buy Raymond Vale’s old estate, tear it down completely, and build a state-of-the-art, high-security shelter and legal advocacy center for women and children escaping domestic abuse. We want to ensure that no child ever has to hide a phone under a floorboard just to be believed."

Avery let out a soft laugh, her eyes shining with deep respect. "Your father would be incredibly proud of you two. You aren't just survivors. You are leaders."
"We're also going to college," Mara added, a brilliant smile breaking across her face. "We both got accepted into the forensic accounting and criminal justice program at Georgetown University. We start in the fall."

Adrian raised his glass of juice in a toast. "To Daniel Cross, who gave you the tools. And to Mara and Lily, who had the courage to use them. To your freedom, girls. May it be long, beautiful, and completely limitless."
They clinked their glasses together, the sweet sound of crystal echoing through the bright, airy penthouse. For the first time in their lives, the future wasn't a dark, terrifying question mark. It was a beautiful, open road.
