Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Circus

Friday morning arrived with an oppressive, stifling heat. The federal courthouse was surrounded by a massive media circus. Satellites dishes lined the streets, and reporters from every major network stood on the steps, shouting into cameras about the "Twisted Twin Con of the Century."

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was electric with tension. Raymond Vale sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that his legal team had managed to smuggle in for him. He looked immaculate, relaxed, and completely confident. Next to him sat Julian Vance, sorting through a leather briefcase filled with legal motions.

In the front row of the gallery sat Celeste. She looked pale, exhausted, and deeply guilty, her eyes darting nervously around the room, completely avoiding the empty prosecution table.

Judge Thomas Harris, a stern-faced man with a reputation for being tough but fair—a reputation that Daniel Cross’s files proved was entirely purchased—banged his gavel to call the court to order.

"We are here for the formal arraignment and bail hearing for Mr. Raymond Vale, accused of aggravated child abuse," Judge Harris announced, his voice booming through the sound system. "I understand the defense has an expedited motion to present before we proceed with the plea."

Julian Vance stood up, smoothing his tie. "Yes, Your Honor. We have a motion to dismiss all charges based on newly uncovered, irrefutable evidence. We have a sworn, notarized affidavit from the biological mother of the alleged victims, Mrs. Celeste Vale. This document clearly states that the injuries sustained by Mara and Lily Cross were entirely self-inflicted, a tragic byproduct of severe, shared psychological delusions aimed at financial extortion."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks.

"Furthermore," Vance continued, his voice dripping with theatrical pity, "we have medical records from their childhood indicating a history of emotional instability. We request that Mr. Vale be released on his own recognizance immediately, and that the court issue an emergency order to commit the Cross twins to a secure psychiatric facility for their own safety."

Judge Harris nodded gravely, looking down at the paperwork. "This is an incredibly serious revelation. Mrs. Vale, do you stand by this affidavit?"

Celeste stood up trembling, her voice barely a whisper. "Yes, Your Honor. My daughters... they need psychiatric help. Raymond is a good man. He tried to save them from themselves."

Raymond smiled, a subtle, victorious smirk playing on his lips as he looked back at Celeste, giving her a nod of approval.

"Very well," Judge Harris said, raising his gavel. "Based on this compelling testimony from the mother, I am inclined to grant the defense's motion and—"

"Before you strike that gavel, Your Honor, the United States Department of Justice has a few objections," a sharp, clear voice interrupted from the back of the courtroom.

The heavy double doors of the courtroom swung open. Walking down the center aisle was Federal Prosecutor Avery Vance, flanked by two heavily armed FBI agents. Behind them, walking with absolute dignity, dressed in sharp, professional suits, were Mara and Lily Cross. They walked without limping, their heads held high, their eyes locked entirely on Raymond Vale.

And walking right behind them was Uncle Adrian, carrying a secure military-grade briefcase.

The courtroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Photographers stood up, flashing cameras illegally before bailiffs could stop them. Raymond’s smile completely vanished, his face turning an ashen, ghostly white.

"What is the meaning of this?" Judge Harris demanded, banging his gavel furiously. "This is a local municipal arraignment! The Department of Justice has no jurisdiction here!"

"We do now, Your Honor," Avery Vance said, stepping up to the podium with a calm, dangerous confidence. "Because five minutes ago, a federal grand jury in Washington D.C. issued federal arrest warrants for everyone sitting at that defense table. And quite frankly, Your Honor, we have one for you too."
