Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Daniel Cross

Two days later, Mara and Lily were transferred to a secure private room in the pediatric wing, kept under twenty-four-hour police guard. Their physical wounds were beginning to heal into ugly shades of yellow and green, but the psychological scars remained raw.

The door clicked open, and a tall, broad-shouldered man in a crisp military uniform stepped into the room. He had a rugged, weathered face and kind, piercing blue eyes. It was Uncle Adrian, their late father’s brother, a high-ranking military intelligence officer who had been stationed in Europe for the past two years.

"Mara. Lily," Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion as he rushed to their sides, pulling them both into a careful, tight embrace. "I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry I wasn't here."

"Uncle Adrian," Lily sobbed, buried in his shoulder. "Mom wouldn't let us call you. She changed our numbers. She told us you forgot about us."

"She lied to me too," Adrian said, pulling back, his eyes burning with fury. "Every time I called the house, she told me you girls were at boarding school, or away camp, or just didn't want to talk to me. I should have investigated. I should have known better when Daniel died. I knew Raymond Vale was a predator, but I didn't realize how deep the rot went."

Mara looked at her uncle. "He wanted the trust fund, Uncle Adrian. He thought Mom had access to it. He kept us isolated so nobody would find out about the money or what he was doing to us."

Adrian nodded grimly. "The police have the audio recordings you saved, Mara. I spent the last forty-eight hours with the District Attorney. The evidence is brutal. It’s enough to deny him bail, which is a massive victory. Raymond’s lawyers tried to argue the recordings were illegally obtained wiretaps, but since you were a minor recording inside your own bedroom for your own protection, the judge threw their motion out."

"Is he in jail?" Lily asked, hope flickering in her eyes.

"For now, yes. He's locked up at the county facility, awaiting formal arraignment," Adrian explained. "But don't underestimate him. Raymond has a massive network of corrupt city officials, judges, and high-priced attorneys. He’s already trying to shift the blame entirely onto your mother, claiming she was the abusive one and he was just trying to protect his public image."

"And where is Mom?" Mara asked, her voice cold, devoid of affection.

Adrian sighed heavily, pulling up a chair. "Celeste has been arrested as an accessory to aggravated child abuse and corporate fraud. When the feds started digging into Raymond’s finances based on the police report, they found something else. Something connected to your father’s death."

Mara sat up straighter, ignoring the sharp pain in her ribs. "What do you mean?"

"Your father, Daniel, didn't die of a heart attack, girls," Adrian said, lowering his voice to a whisper. "He was a forensic accountant who had just started auditing one of Raymond Vale's major offshore shell companies. Three days after Daniel discovered a massive money-laundering scheme involving city infrastructure funds, he collapsed at his desk. The coroner back then ruled it natural causes, but the new federal investigators just uncovered a series of massive wire transfers from Raymond’s offshore accounts to that very coroner’s private bank account in the Bahamas."

Lily gasped, covering her mouth. "He killed Dad? Raymond killed our dad?"

"We believe so," Adrian said, his jaw tight. "And your mother knew. Or at least, she suspected it and took a massive payoff in the form of a luxurious marriage to keep her mouth shut. She signed away her own husband’s life, and in doing so, she handed you two over to the devil himself."

The weight of the revelation crushed the remaining innocence within the room. Mara felt a dark, cold resolve settle deep into her bones. Raymond Vale hadn't just tortured them for pleasure; he had murdered their father to steal their future.

"We're going to destroy him, Uncle Adrian," Mara said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, adult intensity. "We aren't just going to testify. We're going to use Dad’s financial archives to strip him of every single dollar, every piece of land, and every ounce of power he has. He wanted our father's legacy. We're going to use that legacy to bury him."
