Chapter 10 - The Palmer House Showdown

The grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton was packed to the gills with journalists, TV cameras, financial analysts, and corporate speculators. Flashing camera bulbs illuminated the podium where Julian Vance stood—a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke Italian tuxedo, exuding an air of arrogant aristocratic power that made Ryan Cole look like an amateur street hustler.

“...and let me be crystal clear,” Julian was saying into the array of microphones, his British accent dripping with condescension. “Vela Dynamics’ hostile takeover of Meridian Corporation is an egregious violation of international trade law. Ms. Evelyn Hart has weaponized malicious code, forced illegal asset freezes, and unlawfully ousted legitimate corporate executives under false pretenses. As Meridian’s primary stakeholder and long-term financial partner, Obsidian Maritime will not stand idly by while a rogue data company dismantles decades of industrial heritage.”

A chorus of camera shutters clicked furiously as reporters shouted overlapping questions from the floor.

“Mr. Vance! Are you planning to launch a counter-suit?”

“Does Obsidian Maritime intend to buy back Meridian controlling shares?”

Julian raised a hand, smiling smugly for the cameras. “We are filing an emergency federal injunction to nullify the acquisition agreement immediately. Ms. Hart’s reign of corporate tyranny ends—ing—”

The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang. All heads turned as I walked down the center aisle, flanked by Marcus Vance and two private security specialists. The murmurs died down instantly, replaced by a wall of clicking camera lenses shifting their focus toward me.

Julian stopped talking, his aristocratic smile freezing into a tight, hard line as I walked straight up the steps of the stage and stopped right beside the podium.

“Looking for me, Julian?” I asked, my voice carrying clearly through his own microphone.

Julian recovered his composure quickly, leaning into the mic with a condescending chuckle. “Ah, Ms. Hart. How brave of you to show up uninvited. I suppose no one ever taught you that adults are speaking.”

“And no one ever taught you, Julian, that before you file an injunction in my country, you should check who actually owns your offshore shell companies,” I replied calmly.

Julian’s smirk faltered slightly. “What are you talking about?”

Marcus stepped forward, plugging a portable USB drive into the podium’s media console. Instantly, a massive financial document projected onto the giant screen behind us, displaying Obsidian Maritime’s corporate registry alongside an intricate web of hidden transactions.

“At 11:45 AM today,” I announced to the stunned room of journalists, “Vela Dynamics finalized the acquisition of Obsidian Maritime’s primary European debt portfolio. We didn't just buy Meridian Corporation, Julian. As of twenty minutes ago, your own holding company owes my firm four hundred and eighty million dollars in overdue loans.”

The color drained completely from Julian Vance’s face, his hands gripping the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned stark white.
