Chapter 11 - The Tables Turn

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the overhead projector cooling fans. Julian Vance stared up at the giant projection screen, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief, fury, and sudden, creeping dread. The document displayed in glowing white letters was an ironclad debt restructuring agreement bearing his own corporate seal and signature from a distressed liquidity loan he had taken out six months prior in Zurich.
“This... this is impossible,” Julian stammered, his polished British accent cracking slightly around the edges. “That debt was structured through a three-tier anonymous trust in Liechtenstein! You couldn't possibly have accessed those records without violating international banking secrecy laws!”
“International banking secrecy laws apply to people who operate within legal boundaries, Julian,” I said, stepping closer to him until I was well within his personal space, my gaze locked onto his panicked eyes. “They don't apply when a federal grand jury unseals a money-laundering investigation triggered by the Department of Justice—an investigation your own shipping lines were stupid enough to route through Meridian’s logistics network.”
A reporter in the front row stood up abruptly, shouting into a handheld recorder. “Mr. Vance! Is it true that Obsidian Maritime is under federal investigation for international smuggling? Did you use Ryan Cole to launder capital through Meridian Corporation?”
Cameras flashed frantically, blinding Julian with white light. He raised a hand to shield his eyes, stumbling backward against the edge of the podium. The suave, untouchable corporate raider facade had completely evaporated, leaving behind a cornered rat realizing his trap had snapped shut.
“No comment! This is a malicious fabrication!” Julian shouted, his voice pitching higher in panic as he tried to push past my security guards. “You’ll hear from my lawyers in Geneva! You can't just—this is corporate terrorism!”
“Corporate terrorism is what you and Ryan called standard business practice,” I replied smoothly, turning back toward the wall of microphones. “Effective immediately, Obsidian Maritime’s North American assets are being seized under federal forfeiture laws, and Vela Dynamics is assuming absolute operational control of all international shipping lanes previously managed by Mr. Vance.”
Julian let out a furious curse, lunging forward as if to snatch the microphone from my hands, but my security specialists intercepted him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency.
“Get your hands off me, you thugs!” Julian roared, thrashing wildly as flashbulbs captured every humiliating second of his downfall. “You haven't won! My partners in Zurich will—!”
“Your partners in Zurich are currently answering questions from Interpol,” I interrupted quietly, leaning down so only he could hear. “Have a nice flight back to London, Julian. Economy class, of course. After all, people like you might feel more comfortable there.”

As security escorted a screaming, red-faced Julian Vance out through the service exit, the entire ballroom erupted into chaotic pandemonium. Microphones thrust toward me from all directions, reporters shouting overlapping questions about the largest corporate hostile takeover in modern economic history.
I didn't answer a single question. I simply stepped down from the podium, turned my back on the flashing lights, and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the media circus eating out of the palm of my hand.
