Chapter 8 - The Arrest

The front doors of the penthouse burst open with a resounding crash before Ryan could formulate his next desperate plea. Four federal marshals, clad in tactical vests and carrying official arrest warrants, swarmed into the living room, their boots echoing sharply against the hardwood floor.
“Ryan Cole?” the lead marshal demanded, stepping forward with his badge displayed prominently. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, embezzlement, and conspiracy against a federal defense contractor.”
Ryan staggered backward, his hands trembling as he stared at the heavy steel handcuffs dangling from the marshal’s belt. “No! There’s been a mistake! My lawyers are handling this! I demand to make a phone call!”
“Your lawyers dropped you thirty minutes ago, Mr. Cole,” Marcus Vance said, stepping out from the elevator lobby behind the marshals with his tablet in hand. “Your legal counsel reviewed the DOJ asset forfeiture filing and realized defending you was professional suicide.”
Vanessa let out a piercing scream, dropping her phone onto the kitchen counter as two female officers approached her. “Wait! I didn't do anything! I was just an employee! Ryan forced me to sign those papers! He used my name without my consent!”
Ryan whipped his head around, his face twisting in betrayal and absolute rage. “You lying bitch! You helped me set up the Apex Horizon accounts in the Cayman Islands! You spent more of the embezzled money than anyone!”
“Shut up, Ryan! Shut your mouth!” Vanessa sobbed hysterically, thrashing as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. “You promised we’d be safe! You said Evelyn was too stupid to ever catch up to us!”
I stood quietly by the window, watching the dramatic spectacle unfold without the slightest hint of satisfaction or joy—only a deep, quiet sense of closure. Eight years of sleepless nights, self-doubt, and relentless grinding had all led to this exact moment.
The marshals grabbed Ryan by both arms, spinning him around and slamming his wrists into cold steel cuffs. He struggled violently, shouting obscenities as they dragged him toward the exit, his expensive Italian leather shoes dragging uselessly across the rug.
As they pulled him past me, Ryan stopped for a split second, looking up with eyes filled with venomous hatred. “This isn't over, Evelyn! You think you’ve won, but Meridian is a poisoned chalice! You don't know who’s really backing my division! When they find out what you’ve done, they’ll destroy you and your precious Vela Dynamics!”
“Let them try,” I whispered, watching as the heavy doors closed behind him, locking him out of my world for good.

Arthur Bennett walked over to my side, handing me a fresh cup of black coffee from the kitchen counter. “Well, Ms. Hart. That’s Act One completed. But Mr. Cole’s parting words weren't entirely paranoid. There is a silent partner behind Meridian’s international shipping logistics... someone much more dangerous than Ryan.”
I took the coffee cup from his hands, my eyes narrowing as I looked out over the sprawling city. “Then it’s a good thing I brought enough ammunition for Act Two.”
