Chapter 2 - The First Directive

The stage lights felt unusually hot against my skin as I stepped up to the podium. Arthur Bennett clicked the microphone on, the subtle feedback loop echoing across the cavernous ballroom. Below us, two hundred of Meridian Corporation’s elite executives, board members, and high-ranking directors stood frozen, their expressions a chaotic mix of terror, confusion, and desperate calculation.
Ryan was still struggling against the security guards near the edge of the room, his face flushed a deep, furious crimson. “Let go of me! Do you know who I am? I just closed the Henderson account! I brought in forty million this quarter alone!”
I rested my palms on the polished mahogany podium and looked directly down at him. “Not anymore, you didn't.”
I opened the black leather restructuring file. The heavy parchment pages turned with a crisp, authoritative sound that seemed to reverberate through the dead silence of the hall. “Effective immediately,” I announced, my voice carrying clear and steady across the room, “Meridian Corporation is initiating Phase One of our global structural audit. All executive vice presidents, senior vice presidents, and division heads are hereby suspended pending a comprehensive review of asset utilization, expense reporting, and code compliance.”
A collective gasp surged through the crowd. Several directors immediately began whispering frantically to one another, their eyes darting toward the exit doors.
“And as for Ryan Cole,” I continued, pausing to let the weight of my words settle over the room, “his employment is terminated with cause, effective immediately. Escort him and Ms. Lane off the premises.”
Vanessa shrieked, her voice cutting through the murmurs like broken glass. “You can’t do this! Ryan made this company! You’re just a bitter, vindictive ex-wife using a hostile takeover to satisfy a personal vendetta!”
“Vengeance is an expensive hobby, Vanessa,” I replied smoothly, closing the folder with a sharp snap. “And trust me, I can afford it. Security, please ensure they don't take any company property with them—especially anything purchased with corporate expense accounts.”
As the guards dragged Ryan and Vanessa toward the grand double doors, Ryan turned back, his eyes burning with a desperate, venomous hatred. “You think you’ve won, Evelyn? You’re sitting on a ticking time bomb! Meridian isn't just software—you don't know what’s buried in these books!”
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off his threats. The ballroom remained unnervingly quiet. No one moved. No one dared to breathe too loudly.
Arthur Bennett stepped up beside the podium, adjusting his bowtie with a slightly trembling hand. “Brilliant opening move, Ms. Hart. But... Mr. Cole’s final warning wasn't entirely baseless. There are legacy accounts within Meridian’s international division that haven't been audited in over five years. We suspected irregularities, but we didn't have the legal leverage to force an open inspection until tonight.”

I looked down at the confidential audit summaries tucked into the back pocket of the file. The numbers didn't add up. Millions of dollars were unaccounted for, routed through shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under names that looked eerily familiar.
“Let them audit,” I said quietly, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. “If Ryan thinks he can bury his past sins in Meridian’s balance sheets, he’s about to find out how thoroughly Vela Dynamics cleans house.”
