Chapter 15 - Whispers in the Boardroom

The transition of power at Meridian Corporation was complete, but corporate empires never truly sleep. One morning, as I reviewed the quarterly compliance reports, a red-flagged anomaly caught my eye—a dormant offshore account linked to a mysterious subsidiary called Horizon Peak, registered in the British Virgin Islands.
I buzzed Marcus into my office. “Marcus, look at this routing code. Horizon Peak. Isn’t that strikingly similar to the Apex Horizon shell company Ryan used?”
Marcus leaned over my desk, tapping his tablet to run a reverse trace on the corporate registry. His expression darkened instantly. “Evelyn, you’re not going to like this. Horizon Peak wasn't liquidated with Ryan’s assets. Someone else inherited the controlling shares of this subsidiary three weeks before Julian Vance was sentenced.”
“Who?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
“A woman named Victoria Vance—Julian Vance’s younger sister and former legal counsel for Obsidian Maritime,” Marcus replied grimly. “And according to our intelligence feeds, she didn't just inherit the shell company. She’s been quietly buying up dissenting shares of Meridian stock on the open market while everyone was focused on the trial.”
I leaned back in my chair, a slow, calculated smile spreading across my lips. “So Julian’s sister thinks she can pick up where her brother left off? She’s playing a dangerous game.”

“Worse than that,” Marcus warned, sliding a encrypted drive onto my desk. “She’s allied herself with Marcus Sterling—remember him? The silver-haired board member who tried to defend Ryan during the emergency vote? He’s been feeding her internal board memos for the past month.”
I stood up, walking over to the glass wall overlooking the bustling Chicago streets below. “Call an emergency meeting of the executive committee for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. If Victoria Vance wants a war, we’ll give her a front-row seat.”
