Chapter 6 - The Emergency Board Meeting

By 9:00 AM, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Meridian Tower was packed to capacity. The remaining board members—the ones who hadn't been directly implicated in Ryan’s inner circle—sat around the massive oval table with pale, anxious expressions. Rumors of an impending federal investigation were already leaking through the financial district, and Meridian’s stock was flashing warning signs in pre-market trading.
I walked into the room flanked by Arthur Bennett and Marcus Vance. I wore a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit that contrasted sharply with the white outfit I wore the night before—a visual signal that the celebration was over and the reckoning had begun.
I took my seat at the head of the table, resting my hands calmly on the polished surface. No one spoke. The heavy silence was broken only by the rhythmic ticking of a vintage brass clock on the mantelpiece.
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” I began, my voice clear and authoritative. “As you are aware, Vela Dynamics acquired a controlling seventy-two percent stake in Meridian Corporation yesterday afternoon. Since taking ownership, my executive team has uncovered systemic financial fraud, embezzlement, and unauthorized diversion of corporate funds into offshore shell entities controlled by our former Executive Vice President, Ryan Cole.”
A murmur erupted around the table. One of the senior board members, a silver-haired man named Richard Sterling who had been a staunch ally of Ryan, slammed his hand onto the table.
“This is outrageous!” Sterling shouted, his face reddening. “Mr. Cole brought in record sales for this company! You can’t just stand here and make wild accusations of criminal activity without concrete proof—especially during a hostile takeover!”
I didn't blink. I simply nodded to Marcus, who connected his laptop to the boardroom’s main projection screen.
“Mr. Sterling,” I said smoothly, “feel free to examine the evidence yourself. Up on the screen, you’ll see the exact routing numbers of twenty-four separate wire transfers totaling over fourteen million dollars, funneled directly from Meridian’s primary revenue accounts into Apex Horizon—a shell company registered under Vanessa Lane’s maiden name and managed by Ryan Cole.”
The projector flashed bright, displaying bank statements, signed authorization memos, and a detailed flowchart connecting the stolen funds to offshore real estate portfolios in the Cayman Islands.
Sterling’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He stared at the screen, his color draining rapidly as he recognized his own signature approving one of the fraudulent vendor invoices two years prior.
“Furthermore,” I continued, leaning forward, “Mr. Cole’s illicit operations compromised a classified Department of Defense logistics pipeline. Federal investigators have already been notified. Unless this board votes unanimously right now to ratify an emergency internal restructuring and cooperate fully with the DOJ, every single person sitting in this room who signed off on these financial reports will be named as co-conspirators.”
The room descended into absolute, suffocating terror. No one dared to look at Sterling. No one dared to defend Ryan.

Arthur Bennett raised his hand first. “I move that we ratify Ms. Hart’s emergency restructuring plan and hand over all financial records to the Department of Justice immediately.”
Three seconds later, every hand around the table went up.
