Chapter 10 - The Ghost of the Past

The dust from the gala disaster had finally begun to settle, leaving behind a reshaped corporate landscape at Valeon Technologies. As Co-CEO, my days were consumed by high-level strategic acquisitions, global compliance audits, and rebuilding investor confidence. Yet, even in the rarefied air of corporate supremacy, ghosts of the past have a persistent way of lingering.
It was late Friday evening. The sprawling open-plan office on the top floor of Valeon Tower was quiet, save for the hum of air conditioning and the soft tapping of my keyboard as I finalized the Q3 financial projections. The city lights below sparkled like scattered diamonds against the velvet black of the night.
A soft knock echoed at my office door. Without looking up from my screen, I spoke. 'Come in, Robert. If this is about the London restructuring, the numbers look solid—'
'It’s not Robert,' a quiet, trembling voice interrupted.
I stopped typing instantly. I lifted my head and turned my gaze toward the doorway. Standing there, looking small, broken, and entirely out of place in the opulent executive suite, was Vanessa Reed.
She wasn't wearing her shimmering silver nightclub dress anymore. Instead, she wore a plain, oversized grey hoodie and faded jeans, her face completely free of makeup, revealing dark, exhausted circles under her eyes. The untouchable corporate mistress had been reduced to a frightened ghost.
I leaned back in my ergonomic leather chair, folding my hands neatly on the desk. I didn't speak, letting the silence stretch between us like an invisible barrier.
'How... how did you get past security?' I asked coldly.
'I didn't,' Vanessa whispered, taking a hesitant step into the room. 'I waited outside the parking garage for three hours until one of the catering vendors left a side door propped open. I... I just needed to talk to you, Claire. Five minutes. That’s all I ask.'
I studied her for a long moment, noting the tremor in her hands and the stark terror in her eyes. 'You have a federal immunity deal, Vanessa. You’re walking free. Why are you here? Looking to test your luck a second time?'
'No!' she cried out softly, dropping her gaze to the floor. 'No, I’m ruined. The immunity deal kept me out of a prison cell, but my professional life is completely obliterated. Every corporate firm in the country has blacklisted me. I can’t rent an apartment, I can’t open a bank account, I can’t even get hired as a receptionist in a strip-mall clinic. My life is over.'
'And you expected sympathy?' I asked, my voice devoid of warmth. 'You helped Adrian loot millions in R&D funds, you paraded your affair in front of five hundred people, and you stood by laughing while he shoved me onto a marble floor. What did you think was going to happen? That we would applaud your ambition?'
'I thought he was going to win!' Vanessa blurted out, tears spilling over her lashes. 'He promised me the COO position! He convinced me that you were weak, that you were just a domestic shadow he could discard whenever he pleased! He lied to me, Claire! He lied to everyone!'
'He lied to you because you were arrogant enough to believe you could steal another woman’s life without consequence,' I replied sharply, standing up from my desk and walking slowly toward her. 'Ambition without ethics is just greed, Vanessa. And greed always presents an invoice in the end.'
She shrank back, trembling under my gaze. 'Is there... is there anything I can do? Any condition? I’ll do whatever it takes. Please.'
I stopped a few feet from her, looking down with cold detachment. 'There is nothing you can do for me, Vanessa. Your debt to the company has been settled through your cooperation. But your debt to yourself—your realization of what you chose to become—that’s something you’ll carry for the rest of my life.'
I turned my back on her and walked back to my desk, picking up my phone. 'Security,' I spoke clearly into the line. 'Escort Ms. Reed out of the building. And ensure she never sets foot on Valeon property again.'

Within minutes, two security guards appeared, gently but firmly escorting a weeping Vanessa out of the executive suite. The heavy oak doors closed behind her with a soft click, sealing the chapter completely.
I sat back down at my desk, looking out at the glittering Manhattan skyline. The past was finally buried. The future belonged entirely to me.
