Chapter 5 - The Morning After the Purge

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a cold, brilliant light across the penthouse apartment that Adrian and I had shared for the past five years. Every single piece of art, every custom-built piece of Italian furniture, and every square foot of marble flooring had been purchased using Vale family funds—a fact Adrian had conveniently chosen to forget in his relentless quest to prove his self-made supremacy.

I stood by floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sipping a cup of black coffee while watching the morning traffic crawl across the bridge far below. My phone buzzed continuously on the marble kitchen island—dozens of frantic text messages, missed calls, and encrypted emails from Adrian’s closest allies, board members trying to distance themselves, and media outlets desperately sniffing around for confirmation of the gala disaster.

I ignored them all. Let them panic. Uncertainty was a far more exquisite torture than immediate answers.

The heavy oak front door clicked open, and Adrian stumbled into the penthouse. He looked like a ghost of the man who had stood triumphantly on stage less than twelve hours ago. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his tie was ripped half off, and his eyes were bloodshot and hollow. He had spent the entire night at corporate headquarters trying to access his accounts, only to find himself locked out of every digital portal, server, and building access point owned by Valeon Technologies.

'Claire...' his voice croaked, raspy and desperate, as he saw me standing by the window. He took a stumbling step forward, his hands trembling violently. 'Claire, please... you have to listen to me. We need to talk. This... this is insane. Your father is destroying everything we built!'

I didn't turn around immediately. I took a slow sip of my coffee, savoring the bitter warmth before pivoting to face him. 'Everything we built, Adrian? Let’s clarify that right now. You built nothing. You were an employee—a glorified middle manager whom my father elevated because I asked him to give you a chance.'

Adrian flinched as if I had struck him across the face. 'That’s not true! I worked seventy-hour weeks! I closed the Henderson deal! I earned my position!'

'You closed the Henderson deal because my father’s legal team cleared the regulatory hurdles behind the scenes, and because senior partner Henderson happened to be my godfather who took pity on your amateurish pitches,' I countered smoothly, walking over to the kitchen island and leaning against it. 'Every major milestone you achieved was cushioned by my family’s safety net. And how did you repay that? By sleeping with your secretary and shoving me onto a marble floor while telling me to know my place.'

'It was a mistake! A momentary lapse in judgment!' Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with rising hysteria as he slammed his palm onto the kitchen counter. 'Vanessa meant nothing! She was just a distraction! We’ve been married for eight years, Claire! Doesn't that mean anything to you?'

'Eight years,' I repeated softly, my eyes locking onto his. 'In those eight years, you systematically tried to diminish me. You told me my corporate law degree was a cute little hobby. You hid me away from high-level dinners because you were terrified I was smarter than you—which, as it turns out, I am. You used my name, my father’s company, and my patience to build your fragile ego.'

I reached into my pocket and tossed a thick manila envelope onto the counter right in front of him. It slid across the polished stone and stopped against his hand.

Adrian looked down at the envelope as if it were a venomous snake. 'What... what is this?'

'Petition for divorce,' I replied evenly. 'Along with a full restraining order, a complete forfeiture of all shared assets acquired during the marriage under the prenuptial agreement you eagerly signed without reading back in twenty-eighteen, and a notice of civil litigation for physical assault.'

Adrian ripped the envelope open with trembling fingers, pulling out the legal documents. His eyes scanned the pages, and the last remaining color drained from his face. 'No... no! You can’t take everything! The pre-nup—it says—it says if we divorce due to infidelity on my part, I forfeit all stock options and baseline settlement! But you can't prove—'

'Robert Sterling secured high-definition surveillance footage from the hotel ballroom, the audio recordings from your microphone, and three years of encrypted chat logs between you and Vanessa detailing your offshore financial movements,' I interrupted, my voice as cold as ice. 'You don't have a leg to stand on, Adrian. Your lawyers won't even take your case once they see the forensic audit.'

He sank slowly to the floor, his knees giving out beneath him, staring up at me with absolute devastation. But there was no pity in my heart—only the cold, satisfying clarity of absolute justice.
