Chapter 12 - Echoes Behind Bars

Federal Correctional Facility Otisville sat upstate, surrounded by dense pine forests and cold chain-link fences topped with coils of razor wire. It was a stark, unforgiving environment designed to strip away every vestige of civilian vanity and status.
In the sterile visitor’s booth, separated by a thick pane of reinforced plexiglass, Adrian Cross sat waiting. He wore a standard-issue orange jumpsuit that swallowed his frame, his hair cropped short, his skin pale and sallow from lack of sunlight. The bespoke Italian suits, the Rolex watches, the swagger of a newly crowned CEO—all of it had been reduced to a serial number and a concrete cell.
When the heavy metal door clicked open and I stepped into the booth on the other side of the glass, Adrian looked up. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of his old arrogance flashed in his eyes, instantly replaced by sheer, crushing defeat.
He picked up the molded plastic phone receiver. I picked up mine, keeping a cool, professional distance.
'Claire...' his voice crackled through the tinny speaker, hollow and broken. 'I didn't think... I never thought you’d actually come here.'
'I didn't come to reminisce, Adrian,' I replied evenly, my voice smooth and detached. 'I came to deliver final closure.'
He stared at me through the glass, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears. 'Why are you doing this? I’m already here. I’m serving seven years. My career is gone, my reputation is destroyed, my family won’t even answer my letters. Why torture me further?'
'Torture?' I tilted my head slightly. 'Adrian, this isn't torture. This is administration. You called me to your level of reality, so I showed you mine. Do you remember what you shouted at me on that ballroom floor while your mistress laughed?'
Adrian flinched violently, closing his eyes as the memory rushed back. *'Know your place!'*
'You told me to know my place,' I continued quietly. 'And you were entirely right. My place is at the top of Valeon Technologies, holding the absolute power you were arrogant enough to steal. Your place is right here, behind this glass, contemplating the price of your own stupidity.'
'I was ambitious,' he whispered, his voice cracking. 'Every man in corporate life wants to climb higher. I just... I lost my way.'
'No, Adrian. You didn't lose your way. You simply revealed your core. Ambition without character is just a disease, and you were infected from the start,' I said, placing my receiver back on its cradle. I stood up, smoothing down the lapel of my tailored wool coat.

Adrian banged his fist weakly against the plexiglass. 'Claire! Wait! Don’t leave me like this! Claire!'
I didn't look back. I turned on my heel and walked out of the visitation room, leaving the ghost of my former marriage locked securely behind bars where he belonged.
