Chapter 4 - The Legal Dissection

The air in the grand ballroom was so thick with tension that breathing felt like an exercise in willpower. Adrian knelt on the cold marble floor, his hands clawing weakly at the hem of my navy dress in a desperate, pathetic display of supplication. The man who had roared 'Know your place!' just ten minutes prior was now begging for mercy from the woman he had treated like domestic furniture.
'Get up, Adrian,' I said, my voice devoid of emotion. 'You’re embarrassing yourself again. And frankly, your desperation is as unappealing as your arrogance.'
I stepped back, effortlessly evading his grasp, and turned to my father, who was now walking down the private staircase from the VIP balcony, flanked by two corporate security guards. Chairman Samuel Vale moved with the measured authority of a man who had built a global empire from the ground up. He stopped beside the podium, looking down at Adrian with an expression of profound disappointment—not because Adrian had betrayed the company, but because he had been stupid enough to get caught so publicly.
'Mr. Cross,' my father spoke, his voice dangerously quiet. 'When I reluctantly permitted my daughter to marry you eight years ago, I told her that ambition without character is nothing more than a ticking time bomb. You proved my assessment right tonight in the most spectacular fashion possible.'
Adrian looked up, his face streaked with sweat and makeup transferred from Vanessa’s desperate embrace. 'Sir... Chairman Vale... please, give me another chance. I’ll step down as CEO, I’ll take a demotion, I’ll do anything! Just don’t destroy my career!'
'Your career was destroyed the moment you mistook my daughter’s patience for submission,' my father replied coldly. He turned to Robert Sterling, the chief general counsel. 'Robert, initiate the dissolution proceedings immediately. File for immediate asset freezing, emergency restraining orders, and a complete forensic audit of every subsidiary under Mr. Cross’s direct supervision over the past three years.'
Robert nodded briskly, snapping his leather briefcase shut. 'Right away, Mr. Chairman. The legal team has already secured the preliminary injunctions. Mr. Cross’s corporate accounts, company credit cards, and subsidiary holdings are locked as of midnight tonight.'
Vanessa, who had been trying to silently slip away toward the ballroom exit, froze in her tracks as two security guards materialized in front of the double doors, blocking her path. She spun around, her face twisted in panic. 'You can’t keep me here! I’m a private citizen! I demand to leave!'
I walked to the edge of the stage and looked down at her. 'You’re not going anywhere, Vanessa. Not until Robert’s forensic team reviews the internal communications between your department and the offshore shell companies tied to Adrian’s London accounts. Embezzlement and corporate espionage are federal offenses. You might want to save your tears for the federal prosecutor.'
Vanessa let out a strangled shriek and collapsed onto a velvet chair, burying her face in her hands as realization finally consumed her. The glittering, untouchable corporate mistress had turned out to be nothing more than a disposable pawn in a game far larger than she could ever comprehend.
The five hundred employees and executives who had attended the gala to witness Adrian’s coronation were now trapped in a front-row seat to his absolute destruction. No one dared to move, speak, or even breathe too loudly. Phones were clutched tightly in pockets, though everyone knew that streaming or recording this disaster was strictly forbidden under the draconian non-disclosure agreements signed upon entry. Valeon Technologies owned half the legal and media infrastructure in the state; crossing the Vale family publicly was professional suicide.
'Ladies and gentlemen,' I said into the microphone, my voice echoing smoothly through the hall. 'The leadership ceremony is officially concluded. Thank you for your attendance. Please exit through the east doors in an orderly fashion. Security will assist with transportation.'
Within minutes, the ballroom began to clear out like a sinking ship shedding ballast. Executives scuttled toward the exits with their heads down, terrified that eye contact with my father or me would mark them as Adrian’s accomplices. By the time the clock struck midnight, the grand ballroom was empty save for security, legal counsel, my father, and the two pathetic wrecks sitting on the floor.
My father walked over to me, placing a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder. His stern expression softened into one of paternal pride. 'You handled that with absolute precision, Claire. I always knew you had the Vale blood in you.'
May you like
'Thank you, Dad,' I replied softly, letting out a long breath I felt like I’d been holding for eight years. 'It was time to clean house.'
'Indeed it was,' my father said, turning his gaze back to Adrian, who was still kneeling on the marble, staring blankly at his empty hands. 'Now, let’s go home. The real work begins tomorrow.'
