Chapter 17 - Shadows of Redemption

While the Vance Global alliance propelled Valeon Technologies into record-breaking market valuation, the federal correctional facility upstate remained a world frozen in concrete and despair. In a quiet visiting booth, Adrian Cross sat alone, staring blankly at the cold gray wall across from him.
His mother’s desperate letter had been returned unopened, his personal trust funds had been entirely seized under civil forfeiture laws, and his former colleagues in high finance had completely erased his name from their memory. He had become a ghost before his sentence was even half finished.
A guard tapped on the heavy metal door. 'Cross. Visitor.'
Adrian blinked in surprise. He hadn't received a single visitor since his mother’s last desperate call months ago. Slowly, painfully, he stood up and shuffled into the visitation booth, sitting down behind the plexiglass partition.
The heavy door on the opposite side clicked open, and a young woman stepped in. It wasn't me. It wasn't his mother. It was Vanessa Reed.
She looked tired, wearing a simple wool coat without the designer labels or shimmering silver dresses that had defined her brief moment in high society. She picked up the phone receiver. Adrian numbly picked up his.
'Vanessa?' his voice crackled through the speaker, filled with bitter disbelief. 'Why are you here? To gloat?'
'No, Adrian,' Vanessa whispered, her voice surprisingly devoid of anger. 'I’m not here to gloat. I’m leaving New York. Moving out west to live with my sister in Oregon.'
'Why tell me?' he spat out bitterly.
'Because I wanted to see you one last time before I disappear,' she replied softly. 'We were fools, Adrian. We thought we were smarter than everyone else. We thought we could steal a kingdom just by dressing the part. But we forgot that true power isn't something you fake. It’s something you earn.'

Adrian stared at her through the glass, the words hitting him with the crushing weight of absolute truth. He had spent his entire life looking down on the woman who built him, believing his superficial charm was enough to conquer the world.
Vanessa placed her receiver down without another word, turned on her heel, and walked out of the room, leaving Adrian entirely alone in the silence of his own making.
