Chapter 10 - The Mole in Server Room B

Sub-level three of Whitmore Tower was normally a freezing, sterile sanctuary of humming mainframes and flashing blue server racks. Tonight, it felt like a war zone.

Daniel burst through the heavy steel security doors, followed closely by two armed corporate security guards. The emergency red overhead lights were pulsing, casting long, frantic shadows across the concrete floor.

In the center aisle of row four, Thomas Sterling—our Assistant CTO—was frantically typing commands into an emergency console, his laptop connected directly to the master server bus via an encrypted fiber-optic cable.

"Stop right there, Thomas!" Daniel shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.

Thomas jumped violently, pulling his hands away from the keyboard. For a split second, he looked trapped like a cornered rat, his eyes darting toward the exit before he forced a nervous, shaky smile.

"Mr. Whitmore! Thank God you're here," Thomas stammered, holding up his hands defensively. "The system is under a massive foreign cyberattack! I came down here on my own time to isolate the compromised nodes and save the database!"

"Save the database by piping our core encryption keys straight to an external IP address registered in the Caymans?" Daniel asked coldly, walking slowly down the aisle until he stood just a few feet away from the terminal. He glanced at the glowing screen, where a progress bar showed data exfiltration at ninety-eight percent.

Thomas’s false smile vanished instantly. The mask of the loyal employee melted away, revealing the desperate greed underneath.

"You're too late, Daniel," Thomas sneered, grabbing a small USB drive from the port and slipping it into his pocket. "Julian already wired my offshore account five million dollars. The second this transfer completes, your entire supply chain infrastructure turns to digital dust. You can't undo it!"

"I don't need to undo it if I stop you right now," Daniel said, stepping forward to grab him.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Thomas lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy metal wrench from a maintenance toolkit on the shelf and swinging it wildly toward Daniel’s head.

Daniel ducked instinctively, but the heavy wrench clipped his shoulder, sending him stumbling against a server rack. Thomas bolted toward the emergency stairwell door at the end of the hall.

"Stop him!" Daniel yelled, clutching his bruised shoulder.

The two security guards reacted instantly, sprinting down the aisle. Just as Thomas threw open the heavy steel stairwell door, the guards tackled him hard to the concrete floor, pinning his arms behind his back as the USB drive flew from his hand and skidded across the tiles.

Daniel walked over, picked up the drive, and slipped it safely into his pocket. He looked down at Thomas, who was cursing breathlessly against the floor.

"You thought you could betray my family for pocket change," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Take him up to the holding cells. Call federal cyber-response. We're locking down the backdoor once and for all."
