Chapter 18 - The Mystery Investor

The following morning, I called an emergency private meeting in my executive office with Marcus Vance and Daniel. I laid the mysterious linen letter across my desk, letting them read the chilling message.
Daniel stared at the crimson wax seal, his brow furrowed in frustration. "This has to be some kind of sick joke. A copycat, or maybe one of Julian’s old prison associates trying to rattle our nerves.
"No one outside of our immediate legal team and federal prosecutors knew the full extent of Julian’s network, Daniel," I said, walking over to the window. "And federal inmates don't have access to custom linen stationery and crimson wax seals."
Marcus leaned forward, adjusting his glasses as he examined the paper under a magnifying glass. "I ran the watermark through our corporate intelligence database. This specific paper is manufactured by a specialty mill in Geneva, Switzerland—the same mill that supplies private European banking syndicates and sovereign wealth funds."
"A sovereign wealth fund?" Daniel repeated, astonished. "You mean a state-backed entity is interested in Whitmore Global?"
"Not just interested, Daniel," Marcus said grimly. "Look at the timing. Over the past three weeks, an anonymous institutional buyer has been quietly acquiring non-voting shares of Whitmore Global on the open market through a maze of European shell corporations. They now control nearly eight percent of our total equity.
My heart skipped a beat. Eight percent of a multi-billion-dollar global enterprise acquired quietly in the shadows.
"Eight percent isn't enough for a hostile takeover," I noted, keeping my voice steady. "Unless they are preparing to form a proxy coalition with our minority shareholders during the upcoming annual general meeting."
"Which is exactly four weeks from today," Daniel added, realizing the gravity of the situation. "They didn't just send that letter to intimidate us, Mom. They sent it because they're already moving their pieces onto the board."
"Then we don't wait for them to make the first move," I said, turning back to face my son and our chief legal counsel with absolute resolve. "Marcus, I want a complete forensic audit of every institutional trade executed on the London and Zurich exchanges over the last month. Daniel, prepare our board of directors for an emergency defensive share buyback.

Whoever was hiding behind that crimson seal thought they could step into Julian Cross’s empty shoes and finish what he started.
They were about to find out that the Whitmore family was never easier to defeat—we were only getting started.
