Chapter 14 - Whispers in the Boardroom

Three months had passed since the collapse of Cross Capital and the dramatic arrest of Vanessa Brooks. Whitmore Global was riding a wave of unprecedented public approval, hailed in financial journals as a masterclass in corporate resilience and family leadership.

I sat at the center of the mahogany boardroom table, presiding over the quarterly strategic review. Daniel sat to my right, effortlessly commanding the room as CEO, presenting our expansion into sustainable green shipping logistics.

"...and as you can see from the preliminary fiscal reports, our transition toward eco-friendly maritime fleets has reduced operating costs by fourteen percent while boosting investor confidence," Daniel concluded, clicking to the final slide of his presentation.

Polite applause rippled around the table. The board members—once nervous and skeptical during the height of Julian Cross’s covert attacks—now looked at Daniel with absolute admiration and trust.

"Thank you, Daniel. Excellent report," I said, standing up to formally adjourn the meeting. "Meeting adjourned. Have a productive week, everyone.

As the board members filed out of the room, chatting quietly among themselves, Marcus Vance lingered behind, closing the heavy acoustic doors before walking over to my end of the table.

"You wanted to see me privately, Marcus?" I asked, sitting back down and folding my hands.

"Yes, Eleanor. It's about Julian Cross," Marcus said, his expression unusually grim as he placed a thin manila folder on the table. "He's currently awaiting trial in a maximum-security federal facility upstate, but his legal team has been remarkably quiet. No appeals, no aggressive counter-motions."

"That doesn't sound like Julian," I noted, narrowing my eyes. "A man with his ego doesn't go down quietly without exhausting every legal loophole.

"Exactly," Marcus nodded, opening the folder to reveal a single intercepted financial wire transfer. "We traced a series of encrypted transactions moving through an obscure offshore trust in Liechtenstein just forty-eight hours ago. The funds originated from a dormant account that belonged to Julian's late brother—an account federal investigators didn't know existed."

"How much was transferred?" Daniel asked, stepping closer to the table.

"Ten million dollars," Marcus replied quietly. "And the recipient of those funds wasn't Julian's defense attorney. It was deposited directly into a private Swiss holding account registered under a familiar name: Vanessa Brooks."

The room went dead silent. Vanessa was supposed to be completely broke, cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence while rotting in a minimum-security holding facility.

"I thought Vanessa gave up all her offshore connections when she signed the cooperation agreement," Daniel said, disbelief etched across his face.

"She lied to the prosecutors," I said slowly, a cold realization dawning on me. "She didn't give them everything. She kept a hidden nest egg, and Julian just rewarded her silence from behind bars."

The war wasn't completely over. The tentacles of Julian’s conspiracy reached deeper than we ever imagined.
