Chapter 7 - The Shadow of Julian Cross

The federal prosecutor’s office moved quickly once Vanessa signed the cooperation agreement. Armed with the encrypted flash drive she handed over—containing voice notes, wire transfer receipts, and meeting logs—federal agents raided Julian Cross’s Manhattan penthouse before his private jet could leave the tarmac.

But when the tactical team breached the penthouse doors, they found an empty apartment. The coffee was still warm, a laptop on the mahogany desk was wiped clean via remote server commands, and Cross was gone.

Back at Whitmore Tower, Daniel and I stood in my private office overlooking the evening skyline, reviewing Marcus Vance’s briefing notes.

"He slipped through our fingers," Daniel said, his jaw tight with frustration as he tossed the intelligence report onto my desk. "Cross had a contingency escape route prepared the moment Vanessa walked into that boardroom. He always covers his tracks.

"He thinks he's won because he avoided immediate arrest," I said, walking over to the bar cart and pouring two glasses of bourbon, handing one to my son. "But Julian Cross just made a fatal strategic error, Daniel.

"What error? As far as the public knows, he’s just a retired investor living abroad," Daniel asked, taking a sip of the amber liquid.

"By running, he abandoned his primary financial vehicle—Cross Capital Management," I explained, sitting down behind my desk. "When federal agents raided his penthouse, they didn't just look for Cross; they seized his physical server banks hidden in the basement vault. Marcus is running diagnostics on them right now. Within forty-eight hours, we won't just have evidence of his conspiracy against our family—we’ll have the keys to every single asset he holds offshore."

Just as I spoke, the office door flew open without a knock. Marcus Vance strode in, looking flushed and triumphant, holding a freshly printed financial ledger.

"Eleanor, Daniel, you need to see this," Marcus announced, dropping the papers onto my desk. "We cracked the encrypted partition on Cross’s primary server. It turns out Julian Cross wasn't just trying to seize our commercial real estate plazas for a petty revenge plot."

I quickly scanned the financial lines. My breath caught in my throat. "My God... he was systematically shorting Whitmore Global stock using illegal insider accounts while simultaneously trying to force a distress sale of our commercial portfolio."

"Exactly," Marcus nodded. "If Vanessa had succeeded with that prenup, Cross would have triggered a cascading liquidity crisis that would have forced Whitmore Global into bankruptcy protection within six months. Then his holding company would have bought up our entire shipping empire for pennies on the dollar."

Daniel stared at the ledger, his face pale. "He wanted to completely destroy everything my father built. Not just take a piece—he wanted to wipe our family name off the corporate map."

"And now," I said slowly, a cold, sharp smile forming on my lips, "we have absolute proof of market manipulation, securities fraud, and corporate espionage. Marcus, I want you to draft a formal emergency petition for an international asset freeze on every account tied to Julian Cross. Notify Interpol, notify the SEC, and prepare a press release for opening bell tomorrow morning."

"What are we going to do with the press release, Mom?" Daniel asked, watching me intently.

"We aren't just going to defend ourselves, Daniel," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "We are going to launch a public counter-offensive that will hunt Julian Cross out of whatever hole he’s hiding in, and make sure he never sees a free sunrise again."
