Chapter 12 - The Collapse of Cross Capital

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden glow across the trading floors and corporate boardrooms. But at Cross Capital Management’s gleaming headquarters across town, the atmosphere was a scene from a financial apocalypse.
Federal agents, accompanied by SEC investigators, swarmed the glass lobby, serving freeze orders and asset forfeiture warrants on every account tied to Julian Cross. Institutional investors, having caught wind of the Montreal server raid and the impending indictments, were pulling billions of dollars out of Cross funds in a chaotic stampede.
I stood in my office, watching the live news coverage on television as reporters described the sudden, catastrophic collapse of Cross Capital.
"His entire global portfolio is being liquidated by the courts to pay off regulatory fines and civil judgments," Marcus said, walking into my office with a freshly printed summary report. "Cross is completely broke, legally hunted, and utterly ruined."
"Greed has a way of eating its own children, Marcus," I said, taking a sip of my morning coffee. "Julian spent thirty years plotting a revenge war against a ghost, and he destroyed himself in the process."
Daniel walked into the office, looking relaxed for the first time in weeks. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, replaced by the sharp, focused energy of a true leader ready to take over the family legacy.
"The board just finished emergency voting," Daniel announced with a quiet smile. "They unanimously approved our restructuring plan, and my appointment as permanent CEO of Whitmore Global is official."
"Congratulations, son," I said, walking over and placing a proud hand on his shoulder. "Your father would have been immensely proud of how you handled this crisis."
"I couldn't have handled it without you, Mom," Daniel replied sincerely. "You taught me that true strength isn't about avoiding conflict—it's about staying calm when the storm hits."
Just as we were celebrating our victory, my secure phone rang once more. It was an unlisted, restricted number.
I answered it, putting it on speaker so Daniel and Marcus could hear.
"Eleanor," a voice rasped through the speaker. It wasn't the arrogant, confident tone of Julian Cross from yesterday. It sounded old, tired, broken, and defeated.
"Julian," I said evenly. "I'm surprised you still have a working phone line wherever you're hiding."
"You beat me, Eleanor," Julian whispered, his breath shallow. "You and your son... you played this game better than Arthur ever could have."
"Arthur didn't play games, Julian. He built a legacy based on trust and integrity. You tried to build an empire on deceit and extortion," I replied coldly. "Where are you?"
"It doesn't matter where I am," Julian chuckled weakly. "My money is gone. My partners have disowned me. Interpol is closing in on my last safehouse within the hour. I lost everything."
May you like
"No, Julian," I said softly. "You didn't lose everything today. You finally found out what happens when you wage war against the people who protect what they love."
The line went dead with a final, permanent click.
